4WD AG tractor by Caterpillar

I'm new in this forum and what I can say to introduce myself is that I'm 23 years old and I'm from France, so sorry in advance if my english is not always correct.

Two years ago I did a 1:32 scale model of the early Caterpillar Challenger 65 because I really loved this tractor. I achevied this by using a cad software and then I 3D printed. I even made a kit of it and here is the result. This tractor was painted by a friend of mine.

But now I moved onto an other project which is to do the replica at the same scale of the Caterpillar 4 WD tractor. For those who don't this tractor , in the early 80's the Caterpillar teams were working on two projects of ag tractor : a rubber belt tractor/challenger and an articulated tractor and for some reasons the first one wins over the second one.

I don't have a lot of informations about the articuled prototype so I would be very pleased if someone could help me by telling me what became all the prototypes or sharing some pictures. This would be awesome.

Here is how looks my cad drawing for the moment, it's nice but I'm stuck with the articulation, the rear of the tractor and many details !

Must have been a well kept secret because I've never seen or heard of one. Very nice work on the model!

the articulate tractor was brought out to our farm for about a week to experiment with it. dmi brought out equipment to use behind it. pretty sure it was in the late 70's.it originally was not caterpillar yellow but was repainted that way a few years later. I am pretty sure they had built two experimental ones but they never went into production. my cousin was farming our land then and he got to run it and cover it up in his building every night. it was build just 30 miles from me in Peoria,il.

Thomas B,

Very nice work! I did not know that Cat made an articulated wheeled tractor. Always learning something new on this site.

Welcome aboard!

ind38,

Thanks for sharing that story. I grew up in Central IL and was not aware that Cat made an articulated wheeled tractor. Several relatives worked for Caterpillar during the 1970/80's and this was never mentioned.

Your Caterpillar Challenger 65 looks really cool!!! If you don?t mind my asking, how much did it cost you to make?

I'm a big fan of the Caterpillar tractor and the challenger but I've never seen a Challenger 65 like the one I did in model, it's not very common to see such kind
of tractor here in France. So I really appreciate your story.

I guess you don't have any pictures or more information about except the fact that Caterpillar tested it in your family's farm.

And those who were asking I was selling the kit 230? so it's 250$ but I don't have anymore kit to sell.

Your model is so realistic I thought the photo was that of a real early Cat 65. I had a 1989 model for several years with the pneumatic front idler wheels ,but without the 3 point . I think the articulated wheeled model was later made as the Cat Challenger 900 (or similar #)at the Agco Jackson MN plant and a newer version is still made along with tracked tractors.
