John Deere 4440

Folks,

My wife and I just had a little girl are starting a cow-calf operation to raise her on in lamb county Texas (very flat). We have a 4440 2wd single wheel with suitcase weights. Power shift.

Looking to buy a drill that can handle grass seed and small grain (wheat mainly). Always raised cows in East Texas where we don?t do much farming. Looking for advice on how big the 4440 can pull and what type of drill to buy. I think I would like no till but open to options. Any advice is appreciated.

Unless you have a reason to pull a smaller one you can easily pull a 20 foot nothrill drill with a 4440. We pull a 15 foot Great Plains nothrill with any of the 3 806,856,2940 All pull it easily. I like the deere on it with the more hyradulics on it. Lifts faster on the ends. A Deere with the dolly wheel is a poor choice if you have wet ground to plant. That dolly wheel will sink like a rock with no bottom in site. Good drill otherwise.
Most drills will plant wheat seed. Some will adjust small enough to plant alfalfa seed. Our GP will slow down and get small enough to plant it. Other wise if you want to plant the 2 together you will need a seeder attachment added to the drill it is a smaller seed box usually on the front of the regular seed box.

No till If you can afford it . I run John Deere ll147 disc drills to plant all types grass seed and alfalfa I can adjust the rate so I can fill the big box and drill that way . I pull a 16 foot double John Deere lz1010 hoe drill behind a John Deere 100 tool carrier with 16 inch wheat land sweeps with a John Deere 3020 .

Right now I have the ll disc drills separated and have a hitch so can pull them single that works really well for grass seed

The boys have a 15 foot 750 no till drill. For alfalfa they have the seed mixed in with liquid fertilizer and apply the seed that way and then run over it with a cultimulcher.

I would be planting grass seed on a little more than 200 ac, interseeding about the same and planting wheat on about 65 ac.

I have a JD 750 No till I sometimes pull with a 4440 it works great .It would handle a twenty foot drill easy enough, mine is just 15 foot. The closing wheels bearings on it are a joke.We rebuilt ours with an aftermarket closing wheel kit.It Is a lot better setup, not replacing bearings all the time. This one has a grass seed box too.

(quoted from post at 09:13:52 02/04/20) Out in West Tx a lot of smaller operations have JD 8300 series drills. Made in single or double opener and hoe.

There were a lot of end wheel drills utilized yrs back where I live. End wheel drill such as JD model 8300 would require tillage equipment such as disk harrow, chisel & field cult to prepare the soil.
