While crumbling paper to start my fire this morning I found this headline. Talks about a MN corn farmer that only buys older tractors and upgrades them to his needs. Story centers around the J/D 4440.

We have a man down here. That is having his old J D rebuilt. Because that new JD is down for the sixth time. He has work to do. I have a feeling that new one is going back to JD.

The 4440's are one of the very best that Deere made...they can be successfully rebuild to last for years..

Relatedly, are gliders still being produced or did the federales shut down this practice?

It can work for some to run old iron. One issue many farmer may run into is landlords that rent to the guys with shiny iron. To the average joe you look more prosperous with new equipment. Like it or not, life is a popularity contest.

I would certainly agree. I ran one for my friend and long time farmer. Ran a 637 JS Disc 17'-11", gravity wagon with the auger on it, and his new in '08 JD disc mower with conditioning. Great tractor. We noticed the engine was going to need some work, he had it completely overhauled, some cab work done and A/C work done. He was great about taking care of repairs and keeping things in good shape. I really enjoyed working with him all those years and further back when I was a kid. Ran all his JD tractors including the 620. Was very hard to accept things when he passed, ended a long era of farming here, but I have some nice photos and memories with him and all the JD equipment.

In the farm media, that particular story is the hot/in thing to write about. There are several versions of the story making the rounds right now.

What the media fails to point out is the current state of the farming economy, which is pretty poor. When the farm economy goes down, the prices of older usable equipment go up, because the farmers simply cannot pencil out the cost of the new equipment, nothing more. Even Machinery Pete says this.

You are not going to tell me that if corn were $8 right now, that these same guys wouldn't be driving a brand new Deere 7000R or 8000R series tractor, in spite of the "computer junk" and "repair issues."

That they're buying up these old tractors simply in protest of the "computer junk" and "repair issues" is horse dookey.
