Gold belly Ferguson - major problems!

Hi all,
My uncles first tractor is a FE35 gold tractor. It is driving him crazy because he was starting to mow a paddock and it died. Replaced the 4th coil and it fired right up and ran great. 5 minutes later it died, replaced the 7th set of points, ran great. 5 minutes later it died again, not to start. Has anyone had problems like this on this model? Any recommendations? He is now using his David Brown 850 which is going perfectly and is reliable.
Thanks!

6 or 12 volts?? If 12 volts does it have a true 12 volt coil or does it still have 6 volt coil? If 6 volt coil it need a ballast resister or yes you can smoke coils and points

Sounds like the coil doesn't match the voltage.

If it's still running on 6 volts, it needs a 6 volt, 1.5 ohm coil

If it's been converted to 12 volt, it needs either a true 12v 3 ohm coil, or a combination of a 6v coil and a 1.5 ohm resistor.

This can be a tricky area, purchases made carefully, know what you are ordering and verify what you are actually sold. Can't depend on the parts store technician to sell the right parts because this is old school technology, they can't poke it up on the computer!

Then there is the aftermarket parts quality issue. Very hard to find reliable ignition parts now. Stay with the name brands if possible, but even those are notorious for being bad out of the box.

One other consideration would be a Pertronix electronic conversion. But still be sure it has the correct coil or coil/resistor or even that will be short lived.

Also look at the condition of the distributor. If there is any side play in the shaft, the points will not stay set and will be short lived. The electronic kits are more forgiving of a worn distributor. Still there is a limit, and the centrifugal advance needs to be free and functioning to run properly.
