This is the farm In Pa where I stop and get eggs

They have a cooler on the front porch,,get your eggs ,,leave the money

A few weeks ago,,they had a little sign out,,chickens for sale

I asked the nice lady if I could buy some of the soup chickens

She told me when they were going to butcher them

I stopped in yesterday around 10 am,,and the man and wife ,his brother,,and his niece were getting started
I talked a little,,and said,,I come back later

This very ,very nice lady said,,you can stay and help if you want?
I said,,thank you,,I Really want to,,but was afraid to ask.

Now I helped catch chickens in the coupe,,and helped in the whole process
Best of all,,met some of the nicest people I have met in a long time!

I was so thankful they allowed me to join in and share this old family tradition

To keep this tractor related,,if you look careful you can see the nose of a Farmall super C
I Asked about it,,its a 1954 Super C ,,Fast Hitch,,bought new by his Dad
He gave up milking cows in June,,and is feeding some of the young stock to fatten them

I just wanted to share my great day with you all,to me it was priceless,,
AND,,,,
Im gonna make real chicken soup today!!!! Not the mushy soft chicken from the store!!!

Sounds like a great day... though I might have had to pass on joining-in to butcher. LOL

Nothing worse that the smell of hot, wet chicken feathers when scalding them for plucking.

Personally I hate butchering chickens but if you want to raise them then its a job that has to be done. They are fun to raise and fun to eat so the middle part has to be done also.

Man, you did have a great day.
I wish I knew how many chickens my Grandma killed and plucked when she was feeding a family of ten
on the farm.

If you want to get into the chicken thing big time I have a rubber finger chicken plucker you can borrow.I bought it at an auction the lady that was doing the paperwork after the sale asked me what is a chicken plucker? Before I could answer she said on second thought I don't think I really want to know.(LOL)

MY aunt always used an old hen to make chicken pot pie in big pot . She would use the little immature eggs from the hen . She would throw them in the
pot with the heart ,liver, gizzard and everything else . I thought it was a real treat to get a couple eggs . Did you happen to see any eggs when you
butcher the hens?

Glad you enjoyed the experience, Larry. Not surprising that they invited you to join in- most people would welcome crazed Iranian terrorists at chicken butchering time, if they'd behave themselves and help.

We did a chicken butchering when I was about 25- I ordered 25 Black Australorp pullets from Murray McMurray hatchery, and they sent cockerels instead. So when they were 5 or 6 lbs., my folks came out to the farm, and we "did them up." Dad and I killing, scalding and plucking, and wife and my mom eviscerating. Fine time had by all.

Well it's a nice looking little farm and the Super C just makes it better but I'd have to pass on the chicken plucking invite.

Really don't enjoy butchering chickens. have some that need to go about 4yrs old. Did some cornish rock cross last year they grow
big and fast.

Back in high school FFA we butchered chickens as a yearly
money maker. After two days of that Mom wouldn?t let me
wash my clothes in her machine so I trashed my Wranglers
and Shirts and took an outside shower with the hose. Can still
remember that smell.
