4440 engine weight

On the 4440 I am helping overhaul, the tractor owner decided to let the machine shop reassemble the engine.Wondering if his Harbor Frieght 2 ton engine hoist has enough poop to lift the complete engine.Or should I leave the head off and install it after the lower half is in the tractor?Would be nice to already have the head on and the valves adjusted. What does the complete engine weigh? Howabout with the head removed? It would really suck if the hoist wouldn't lift it. Or worse if the hoist collapsed.I acctually wouldn't mind doing the head, but the barn we are using is unheated. It's cold. Brrrr. thanks,Steve.

609-699-4800. Melton Ind. Overhaul or reman John Deere engines. Should know weights as they ship a lot of them.

1796 lbs, from my JD spec book. I wouldn't move it with my HF cherry picker, I have a heavier picker for 466's. With the barn nonheated, it sucks trying to heat the parts up later as they sweat and rust, something you don't want when installing the head gasket.

Depends on the Cherry picker , if you have the Boom in all the way then yes as they seam to rate then with boom retracted. , you move out to the second hole they drop off fast and now your down to a ton and with legs all the way out and boom out on the last hole you may be down to a 1000 lbs or less. The one i had was a ton on the last hole out and four ton on a closed boom. BUT in size it was twice as big and the little car engine ones and made out of 4 1/2 inch box 1/4 inch wall , and it was made in the USA . With that one i could lift a cab off a 1466 setting on 20.8x38 inch rubber , or pull and 855 Cummins out of a truck.

It's just over the edge of not enough. I have a harbor freight cherry picker and just used it to move a 4430 engine from one place to the other in the shop. It started buckling the boom right at the jack. NO WAY would I try to lift it higher than just off the floor.. I used my loader to do any remove install work. And it was barely enough.

My picture didn't post for some reason.
