Removing plug from bottom of fuel tank

I have a gas tank from a Wisconsin engine that I need to remove the plug in the bottom so I can let the gas put through it instead of the top. Can I hear it of course worried about explosion or weld a nut to it. Any help will be appreciated

In order for there to be an explosion, there has to be the right mixture of fumes and oxygen in the tank. Too many fumes, not enough fumes, too much oxygen, not enough oxygen can all prevent explosion.

If the tank just contained gasoline the fumes in the tank will present an explosion risk.

You can air out the tank for a few weeks, flush it with water several times, fill it with exhaust fumes from a lawnmower/quad/vehicle... all of these will disrupt the air/fuel mixture enough to prevent explosion.

Most likely though the bung for the drain plug is soldered on. Too much heat and it will fall off so you have to be careful.

all depends how brave you are, but no! you need to have the tank steamed first if you are using an open flame on it. other way is fill with water. i have soldered gas tanks with the gas in them but used the old style soldering iron that you heat up , then go to it. also have put an air hose inside blowing the vapors out on empty tanks. not telling you to do any of this, as steaming is the proper way.

If the tank has any age or rust deterioration, good chance the entire fitting will tear out, or at best start leaking.

Unless you really need it out, best leave it alone!

You don't say how big the plug is. I have no idea. Would it be possible to drill and tap the the plug where it is, and install a barbed fitting? If necessary you could put a shut off right in the line.

My trick to get a plug out is to TIGHTEN it a few degrees, then take it out. If you can find some LocTite brand "Freeze/ Release", that"ll help.

I blew up a gas tank once when I tried soldering on it. I have an extreme aversion to repeating the process.

Ever since, when I see someone applying heat to a gas tank, I prefer to be about 100 yards away with my fingers in my ears.

"I need to remove the plug in the bottom so I can let the gas put through it instead of the top"

What the heck does that mean, exactly?

Dunno WHY you would need to take a plug out that's been there darned near "forever" to drain a tank that's not over 5 to 14 gallons?.

If you are simply trying to drain the tank, siphon the gas out, or remove the tank and dump it out.

I'm installing a electric fuel pump and
it won't pump the fuel out the top but
if gravity feed from the bottom it will
work

Would it be possible to install a pickup tube in the top hole? Or is that what you already have? I don't know what pump you're using, but I think the popular Facet pumps are self-priming.

Maybe the line from the top of the tank has a hole in it so your pump won't work. Did you have it out to look? Fuel pump on the Wisconsin pump it out the top fitting.
