I have a project that uses PVC pipe. I opened my purple primer and it is no longer purple. Is this a problem? Goofy question I know.

I've had that happen. I was afraid to use it.

More importantly, if the solvent is starting to solidify, don't use it! It's no good.

Here lately I've gone to the "Hot Blue" or whatever they call it, primer and solvent in one.

It seems to have a longer shelf life. I try to keep it in the refrigerator between uses.

I'd replace it. I plumbed my house with CPVC 47 years ago, one of the best decisions I ever made, besides marrying Connie.

That kinda depends on your project . If it is under little or no pressure might be ok . If you decide to buy new , you can buy primer that is clear which is what I prefer. The clear primer leaves your project nice and clean . The purple tends to get messy even if you try to be neat. They also make a cleaner which is much weaker,it does not do near the job as primer does.

My thought is that if it's not purple anymore, it might not be primer anymore either. I'd toss it and buy new. Cheap insurance.

Fresh stuff is too inexpensive to be guessing at this.

$10 on a new primer/cement combo pack vs. $1000's(?) to clean up from a failure.

I've had glued PVC joints come loose as if no cement had been used when I skipped the primer. Luckily they were structural, not plumbing.

I had trouble when I started by trying to use the primer. When I quit trying to use it no more problems.

Put in lots of septic systems, only time we had trouble with glue was using purple primer. Pulled it all back apart, hit it with cleaner and glue, no more trouble on that job.

I know code requires primer , but in my small world, iv'e never used it, never had a leak. 50 years running. If you feel the need, ( code approved ) my son swears by the "blue" all in one, primer and glue. He's been installing interior water falls for years, with no problems with the blue.
