I want an alternator for my JD

My JD has some bad wiring. The main thing is the battery doesn't want to stay charged. I am looking for an alternator with one wire to the battery, to keep it charged. What alternator can I purchase that does this? Makes no difference what else it fits. I can adapt it to fit my JD. Thanks. Stan

Go on ebay DB Electric has very good 1 wire alternators for $50-$60.And don't believe about 90% of the negative stuff about 1 wire alternators I'm running about 10
right now and they work fine.

I just installed a DB starter motor on my '99 Saturn SL-1. It seems to be a high quality unit so far...And the price was great!

, I use a Delco 1 wire. The big thing is to completely strip out the old harness and start fresh. Very easy.. run one wire from the alternator to the app gauge. Then back to battery. Then Paul 1 wire from amp gauge to ignition switch. Then from switch to points or coil. Done. Wrap the whole thing in black electrical tape to make a nice clean sanitary harness. Mount the alternator using the original bracket or build a new one. You can get a new Delco alternator from Napa for about $85. That includes the core charge you pay when you don't have one to turn in.

Delco 10si three wire alternator are what I use . I run a 10 gauge wire from the big terminal on the alternator to the starter solenoid. Then a wire that?s key on and off to excite the alternator. Hook the red wire on plug to the same big terminal and your ready to go .

I gave up on delco alternators, they don t seem to charge well at lower rpm. I ve converted everything to Ford g3 alternators, they work great! I get mine at local salvage yard $15 each.

That?s what they say about the single wire
alternators that?s why I haven?t tried one. The ten si
has no problem putting out 14 volts at 800 rpm

A lot of misinformation about 1 wire alternators on the internet like you just stated someone else will quote it as Gospel.I've mostly found the root of the 1 wire misinformation is from sellers of complicated wiring systems and parts. On several diesel tractors I have the only electrical system required is a wire from the alternator to the hot side of the battery and then a hot wire to the starter button and a wire back to the starter solenoid.no switch required, have run a David brown 780 like that for years, charges fine, doesn't run the battery down when sitting etc etc etc.If needed any electrical system like lights, preheater etc an be added by adding a fused line.I like to use the plug in fuses in each line to make trouble shooting very simple.

Many one wire alternators are not a problem (I have found recent ones to have less than 25 milliamp draw when shut off, and that will not drain a battery for months) If a person measures from the output terminal to the frame of the alternator (At the store) with a good ohm meter, the reading should be above 500 ohms. If less it will draw more when off. Jim

The only reason I haven?t tried a one wire is because they are almost twice as much to buy locally that and I like knowing when I turn the current off the alternator is dead other than that I?d try one .
