I have a john deere 2240 with the swept back front axle that allows the front wheels to turn too far to either side.It will actually push up soil when turning.

anyone have any ideas about this?

Thanks

We have the same 2240, with the swept back front axle. Turns very sharply, by design. Yours might need a bit of front weight, to help the front tires grab. Some slight pressure on a turning brake also helps (especially when 7ft brush mower is raised).

That is normal. Two things to assess. Are you using the wheel brkes to assist turning in the desired direction? If not, it is what they are designed to do. They use the rear wheels to assist in pushing the front in the direction of choice. To turn sharp right push the right brake pedal, left the left brake pedal. The other issue might be if it had a differential lock that has been turned on, this would cause very difficult turning and needs to be on only when going straight, and in difficult traction conditions. jim

Jim, I just checked the bell crank and it looks kinda loose and wobbles some. The tierods are a little
sloppy too. Don't know if this will cause complete collapse of left tire to start plowing or not but
thats where I am going to start.

Thanks

Replacing loose bellcrank brgs would be what I'd suggest to do 1st

Check the axle pivot pins for loosened. A worn pin(s) could make the axle lean back slightly which would significantly exaggerate the problem and also make the wheels more difficult to return to the forward position.

They are designed to turn very sharp, sharp enough to push loose soil even when they were new new. Use your turning brakes in those situations or don't turn as sharp.
