hydralic cylinder

(quoted from post at 21:18:46 01/12/20) can i use a farm implement hydralic cylinder on a mini excavator for a thumb

The thumb will function better using a hydraulic cylinder vs using a hydralic cylinder .

(quoted from post at 06:42:11 01/13/20) Thanks I thought it would but wasn't sure if it put out more hydraulic pressure or not thanks

Pressure is made by the hydraulic pump, not the cylinder.

The cylinder takes the pressure from the pump and turns it into force. The force a cylinder produces is based on the diameter of the piston. Bigger piston, more force.

There's nothing magical about an agricultural cylinder over an "excavator" cylinder. Your biggest challenge will be connecting the hoses.

On a thumb cylinder you're not so much worried about the pressure the pump puts out as you are the pressure that will be caused in the cylinder if you curl the bucket into it. Both can blow seals, but the force generated from the bucket curling can easily bend the rod as well, if the relief doesn't pop first. I've seen it happen several times over the years.

With that in mind, the machine may run at XXX pressure, but you'll want to set the relief on the port going to the cylinder at no more than the pressure rating the cylinder is designed for.

Too, using generic numbers for an example, if you see you can use say a 2 1/2 inch cylinder at 3000 psi, I'd suggest stepping to a 3 inch at 2500. That will typically give you the strength of a larger rod diameter, and give you the power you need at a lower pressure, both of which are important on a thumb.

Good luck.

True BUT check the clevis ends that they fit properly . Check that there isnt any binding as some cylinders have different design . Check that you can get the pins in and out with the cylinder extended and then retracted by hand first rather than forcing it with hyd pressure .
