As Michael indicates. Be sure of CW/CCW. Then put it on some iron with juice on it, and pound around the rusty portion of the housing just below the "nut' Jim

I second tapping around the housing just below the screw in "nut". Place on anvil or other solid rest and tap smartly working around and around. Hold spanner wrench from
coming out with a big washer and nut on the threaded shaft?

Could it be the flange nut is installed on the shaft with permanent (red) Loctite so it can't back off? If the bearings aren't seized, its free to spin inside the housing, correct? I would try heating that flange nut.

Do you have your socket on an impact? Also try turning it the other way. With impact go this way then that way then this way etc. It should come loose.

From the partstree diagram those holes are not there to drive the blade.

Therefore they are there to retain what is inside.
Might have to weld your socket to that flange.
The heat will maybe break the bond.
Once apart you will have a grinding job.

Does it have a grease fitting in the pulley end of shaft?

Partstree does not offer bearings so if no fitting they are likely sealed ball bearings and you have to buy the entire spindle at $114 each.

If they are sealed, maybe that flange is on splined shaft?
But that would negate the need for those two holes.
Unless maybe that same flange is used on another assembly that uses them to turn the blade vs just friction.

They look like RH threads to me! Which way did the nut come off? Probably need to heat it. Google is your friend, there is an 18 minute video showing how to do it!

I got it, I had plenty of other work to do I split the belt idlers measured the bearings got them on the way.

I rebuild the spindles on my Gravely 260 its sort of the same deal I made a tool to get the nut off of that one, a pin is missing...

Yes I made a socket for the Aries.

I put a belt around the pulley cranked it up in a vice the retainer spun off. The big problem is the blade runs on the threads and messes them up, once I saw it in a bind I ran the retainer back in put some anti seize on it and the retainer came off without fudgen up the threads... As far as the retainer it does not need to be threaded when you run the blade nut up it will tank up all the slack...

I have a 72" cut gravely that needed new blade spindle bearings last year.
No wonder bearings do not last as the spindle bearings are just 1" trailer axle bearings, tapered and not sealed.
After every mow, I give them three pumps of grease hoping to push out sand, etc.
That later versions use single seal ball bearings instead.

I had not watched the video before posting the link, now I have some comments! I was surprised how easily the shaft came out, I would put a little locktite between the shaft and bearings when reassembling. It's a standard in machinery, the rotating race should be held solid, and just tightening the nut is not solid! Also, the proper wrench for that nut is a 2 pin spanner, they're easy to make. Also, in the background is an arbor press, that's what he should of been using instead of a sledgehammer! But I don't have an arbor press, but I do have a dead-blow hammer. I spent many years working on similar bearing assemblies.

These bearings were OK it has 189 hr. they were starting to roar I wanted to get them before they went out. The cheapest spindles I found were $100 and the idlers $40 that's $420 SHOCK... I ordered a 10 pack of bearings for $12.99 : )...

Moral of the story this is a home owner grade zero turn brought at home deep'ho its a piece of garbage the front wheel bearings were also shot... You get what you pay for it would not hold up for me. My son brought it used I though it was a deal till I started working on it. The good my son has a nice smooth yard he will use it 20 min a week it should do what he needs do do...

The bearings may not be available from John Deere but may be available from a bearing supply house such as Motion Industries.
