Got the rings off

I?ve been soaking the 550 pistons for several days, decided to try to get them out today. Ground a screw driver down to a point and thinned it up to fit in the ring lands. Worked the heat gun around it for a couple of minutes and started prying on theme. All but a couple came out in pieces, but they are out.

Rent a good ring groove cleaner, worth the money, night and day different from using broken ring.

Have you checked the liners out? I am worried that you may be putting good time into bad if your liners are pitted? Usually when you see the type of corrosion like u can see on 3 of 4 pistons liners may not clean up with deglazing? You may be into new liner/piston kits anyways?

I will just add my two cents. Yes! Take a piston with you and rent the correct cutter tool. Better yet take all of them and do them right there. Bet they will not even charge you! Good deal. Makes a beautiful clean groove. Just be careful with aluminum because stuff disappears really quickly!

I'm going to take the block and pistons to a local machine shop to get checked out and have the sleeves reamed and pistons bead blasted . I think I will have to replace 1 sleeve and piston but will wait until they check it out first and see where I am at. Chris

i can see u have damaged spots on the ring lands. plus you don't bead blast pistons! you could clean that staining up with crocus cloth. they could be hot tanked also.

I have never been a proponent of bead blasting pistons, but there are opinions both ways on the internet.

Bead blasting the bottom of the piston will strengthen it.

I had Kohler that rings were stuc on like that. Got them off and resused pistons, Worked for aboyt 10 years untill the top of piston came off in ring grove. Cylinder walls were scored was told it would never run. Did not make any problems. Even if sleve pitted I would dot wory about it unless hole through or cracked.
