Clicking noise from assy drive/ distributor drive

My 1953 Super H is making a loud ticking/clicking noise on the distributor side of engine. tractor starts and runs fine . no hesitation or miss. Any ideas??

If you remove the oil filler cap does it get dramatically louder? If so it could be a broken cam gear hub or a tooth off of the cam gear. If it is a
stage2 tractor with a engine driven Hydraulic pump at the distributor, it is very possible. Don't run it if that is the case, as tearing up other parts
is not cost efficient. Jim

Jim, no increase in noise when oil fill cap is off. Stage 1 Super H. Pump in belly. I had the pan off no large pieces in pan. With stethoscope you can hear the noise louder at case between distributor and assy drive. Noise is constant weather at idle or high rpm.

The centrifugal advance may be coming apart. The cam and valve gear are on that side, and therefore the valve gear might be a suspect. I would put a
dowel rod (maybe 1/2 inchX20 inches or so) against the distributor, and then the block on the lifter cover behind the distributor. If the sound is
louder at the block cover plate, I would adjust the valves. Jim

yes I did that. The noise is very loud at distributor.

I would take it apart. First set the tractor at TDC number 1 Front of tractor. Pull the spark plugs out so it turns easily. Put your thumb in #1
hole, and turn the engine with the fan (may need help) when air starts coming out of the hole it is on compression. Put a soda straw in the hole and
continue to turn the engine CW from front of tractor!. when the straw gets very near its highest position, there will be a mark on the crank pulley and
a pointer. Line them up. this is TDC #1. Now open the distributor cap and look at the rotor. It should be pointing to about 1:30 if it were a clock.
this should be where the #1 plug wire is attached. Take a picture of it!! Next use a permanent marker and draw a line across the housing and drive so
when it goes back together, it is close to correct timing. Remove the 2 bolts that hold the distributor to the drive housing. It is geared into it so
the rotor will turn as you take it out, note this turn amount to get it back in correctly. Spin it with the gear to see if it is making noise. Take
pictures and remove screws and backing plates to see what is happening inside. If it is toast, this site sells new ones. Jim

So you think it is the distributor not the drive ahead of it?

There is really nothing in that drive housing that would make that noise (if it is the drive gear it will show in the hole. Taking the distriburtor off
would be a part of that anyway. Jim
