Feeder cattle question

In all the years I have raised cattle I always sell the ones I?m not keeping when I wean them. Not a bunch - 100 a year or so. This fall I decided not to sell the spring calves and just background them until spring prices go up. I?ve got the extra hay this year so why not.

I have a neighbor who does a small scale feed out - 20 or so a year. He hauls them to Nebraska right to the packer and get his cash once they are graded. I?ve never feed them out other than to butcher. From far Northeast Kansas is the best route Nebraska? I have no idea how one goes about selling direct. Anyone out there do it? I kind of feel dumb after 40 years of cattle not knowing how they get to finish.

It sounds like you could ship a semi load at a time. Your state or local extension service should have information on building rations with local crops. Your local Ag lenders will know where finished cattle are sold in your area. Other cattle feeders can also help you.

My neighbor has several packer buyers come out and bid his. He then ships them by the semi load.

I feed cull cows and sell direct to a packer, they have a cattle procurement division and I deal with them, I m sure all packers have a similar job title or people who buy the cattle. You can earn premiums selling on the rail but it is risky in the cull cow trade because cows get bruised up over the years and people vaccinate in the hind quarter and like that.
