Old Iron value increase

I've been telling my customers this for years. Some listen, some don't. Those that don't typically learn the hard way, and don't make the same mistake twice.

Tractors? Yes. Select implements such as auto reset plows in good condition and JD 7000 4-6 row planters? Yes. Lots of other things scrap value. I saw a pretty good IH 55 chopper sell a few weeks back for well under 200 dollars.

I didn't know a 3020 was ever made without a rack and pinion axle.

Ditto flanged rear axle shown on that 3020 must have been an experimental model as it's not shown in 3020 parts catalog.

I know that there isn't as much spring in my chicken as there used to be. But I'm not that old. Since when is a tractor from the late 70s to 80s VERY old? I thought VERY old tractors were on steel & ran off of steam. If this is the case, I'm going to list myself on eBay as an antique. ;>D

Mike

P.S. Yes, I know the 70s weren't yesterday, I'm just making light of the subject. Figured I'd clarify this, just in case someone doesn't understand the winking smiley face a the end of my short rant..... that I learned how to do on a typewriter.

Jim could it be axles from a construction model like a JD500. thinking the 4020's were JD600's and the 5000 series were JD700's??

Rear wheels in JD500 parts catalog are different from photo & have 9 bolts not 8

I have some older tractors we still use, and I have found that while repairs might not need a computer to analyze, trouble shoot and repair, but .... Nothing says the manufacturer will have any parts left for your 40-50 year old tractor. And my experience has been companies have jacked the prices on parts that are available for old tractors up through the stratosphere!! The old tractors that I have, can be swapped for one another if they have a sick day, but this really means that I need to have two tractors in the shed , so I can be certain that I will have one to use if the one I was running goes down.

One thing the article does not factor in is the overall farming economy. It's pretty bad right now.

When the farming economy is bad, the values of usable old machines go up. Not because of some "Luddite" movement, but because the new ones are out of reach price wise.

TX that 3020 was made for export and sold most likely in Germany. If you look close you will see the parking brake lever beside the fender. We had a dealer in Pa that imported lots of tractors back to the US from overseas. He brought back a few 3020's like that. The European tractors must have a parking brake so the axles were changed to allow for brake. Tom
