PX and Commisary privaleges

Effective Jan 1 of this year ALL persons with service connected disabilities are entitled to shop at military commissaries and PX (BX). It no longer matters what the percentage is as long as it's service connected. I saw it on TV and went on line to make sure. Now the only problem I have is the 100 mile drive to get to one. Pretty much makes it impossible for me but a lot of you fellow YTers aren't that far from them. Just thought I would pass it on, just might help someone. Keith

Yes, but probably not quite the way you meant. They're trying to keep their volume up so they can remain viable. Sales have
dropped off since online began. Active military folks living right on the base have gone to online buying. If PX/Commissary sales
fall off too much they'll be done away with, or consolidated with other bases.

For me it would be close to a 100 mile round trip. Ft Leonard Wood is about 45 miles from me but then you add the driving on base to the store would probably add another 5-10 miles

Every vet (disable or not) has had access to online PX shopping for a couple of years now.
This is giving access to the brick and mortar store and you can imagine the logistic nightmare that would be to grant all vets access to a on base store.
So they are limiting it to just disable vets.

I told my son about this since he and his wife both work on a army base.
He said perfect timing.
I ship to Germany on the 21st and on base PX shopping is part of the benefits for going overseas.
So it will be 5 years before he can use this benefit when he ships back to the states.

My closest is Offut AFB south of Omaha, about a 150 mile round trip, but it's all Interstate and 4 lane.

I think, too, it's probably being done to try to keep the facilities viable. The Officer's Club at Offut closed recently, apparently because of too much competition from civilian facilities in the surrounding area. Frankly, I never thought I'd see the day when that would happen. Probably not a problem at more remote bases.

Even when I was active it didn't really pay to shop on the base, plus there were always guys trying to help you take stuff out to the car for a tip.
Spent way more money at Food Lion than the commissary.

The guys if they call it Fort lost in the woods will now get in trouble for calling it that. A couple years ago I had a couple of Army guys who liked to deer hunt on my place and they where telling me if they said that they got in trouble

Man, "Fort Lost in the Woods" that sure brings back memories of boot camp and AIT training. That's what we called it 50 years ago! First night of guard duty around the "Four Seasons" and it snowed!

Very common to see conveys driving around this area now days. Saw one a while back at a gas station so stopped in to talk the them. All the truck they where driving had automatic transmission and I was kidding them I could not drive one of them. They asked me why and i said there is not clutch pedal so how do you drive them and shift gears. Had a couple of them who thought I was telling the truth so they tried to tell me how to drive them and I got a good laugh out of that

In 1988 shortly after my father passed my mother wanted an CD/Cassette/Radio. She ask if I could find her one. I went to the PX at Ft Knox and found one I thought would be good for her. Then I decided to wait. Later that day I was in a box store in Radcliff KY and the same unit was cheaper than the PX and that was with adding in sales tax. The PX has not been price competitive in years. By the time I retired in 96 about the only things you could really save money in the commissary was tobacco products and coffee.

Back in the late 60's/early 70's congress forced changes in how the PX and commissary priced things here in at US bases to "make it fairer to off post civilian businesses". Because of those changes pricing in the PX and commissary rose accordingly. Overseas you can still save a substantial amount of money but not if stationed in the US.

john,

I use my retired military ID card to get on
base and into buildings. I have a Real ID
driver's license but only my military ID
works at Fort Meade.
