IH 966 Diesel Question

Have a 70's IN 966 diesel tractor. Was acting like it was loosing poser/rpm back in October.
Replaced fuel filters in November and it ran fine. Tractor doesn't get a lot of use on my acreage.
Went and moved snow on sunday and everything ran great. Was upper 20's.
Went to do some clean up work on Tuesday from drifting and about 20 minutes in, started acting up. Was also in the upper 20's, but more wind.
Not sure if jelling up or not. I added some diesel 911 additive and dumped in another 5 gall0ns of #1. I had a heat lamp on the filters for
a couple hours. Fired right up, but did act a little funny right away. After a minute, was running smooth. let it run about 15-20 minutes.
Was it jelling up, or could it be something else. Friend who is a mechanic for CAT said if it was the injector pump, it either works or doesn't
Said it would act this way if it was the pump

My bet is either gelling issues or filter issues. You?ll likely be fine with additive in your fuel.

I also have a IH 966, great tractors for many jobs. First thing that come to my mind, for your story is. You said it ran fine at first, then acted funny. After you added more fuel it ran normal, not right away, but after a bit. So my thinking is that too me it sounds like something is in the fuel tank, and could be blocking the flow of fuel once the fuel level in tank gets low. Not a huge job to empty the fuel tank on a 966 and clean it out by flushing fresh fuel through it. I have had this kind of problem on other Diesel tractors in the past, not my 966, but that doesn?t mean it couldn?t happen to it too.

My bet would be ice not jelling we had a combine act like that 2 years ago it had 75% number 1 . It had 911 added to it and new filters. When we took the fuel line off at the tank we found an ice cube shaped like the fuel line and it would block fuel flow. When we shut it off it would move away then it would start and run again for a few minutes. We put a bottle of air line alcohol in it and in 10 minutes it run.

If there happens to be any kinks, in any of the lines dirt can partially plug them. Causing this problem, and will only get worse as time goes on or dirt in tank. Flush out the tank and clear lines then, with new filters again try it.

Well since i can not see/ hear what it is doing we will guess , Sometimes they will suck air thru the primer pump when it get colder due to the slea in the primer pump getting harder and you may have some pitting in the bore of the primer pump . Next if you do not keep the fuel tank full you may have a lot of water in the main tank that is frozen at the bottom . Fuel jelling can happen if you have old summer blend in the tank but usually this does not happen till it is colder . as for #1 fuel Nah don't go there , Drain the main tank and fill it with a winter blend from a fuel stop that sells a lot of diesel everyday . Then give it a dose of fuel treatment . Change the filters again and keep a spare set on hand . If you are usen a snow blower keep a couple air filters on hand as well.
