Case IH 5100 Drill DBLE disc opener rebuild

I am looking at possibly rebuilding the DBLE disc openers in my 5100 grain drill. They are worn down from 14" new size to 13 1/2" to 13 5/8" in size. Question is setting the proper contact surface area to both blades, for the proper seed "V" opening. Does anyone have experience on shimming disc openers for this type drill? After inspecting some of the individual units the 2 disc do not touch and create a "W" type seed opening which will give an inconstant plant depth.

Also, how do you know if the pressure springs that apply down pressure on the individual units need replaced?

I think it would be like a corn planter. The way to do them is get 2 business cards and insert them at each end where the dicks meet. The distance between the two cards should be from one and one half inch to two inches. You add or remove the shims behind the dicks to get this measurement.

OK - so the manual gives me the disc contact measurement for this method.

Any comments on inspecting pressure spring wear or weakness?

Thanks

I guess you could pull up on them with a scale and measure the amount of pull it takes to make them move up a measured distance then compare them to each other. I guess unless I was having trouble with depth when planting last season I would not worry about the springs much. Other wise you would have to pull them all off and compare to a new one for length. Obviously if there are any broke ones they need replaced.
