That should be from a center crank steam engine. Very unique engines made at that time.

What kind of machine can weave steel strap?

Bet there's nothing around today that does that!

The letters... Castings? Flame cut? However they did it would have been cost intensive!

I'm always amazed by the detail in metalwork like that. I don't know what a center crank steam engine is but turned up some photos. These are of a Case 1894 center crank return flue engine. If not the same machine, at least related.

First off the Patternmaker carved it from wood to make a casting. Beautiful workmanship !

I knew a guy that was a pattern maker in his younger days, he could sit and carve something just looking at a picture. He carved the Budweiser Clydesdales and wagon that way.
