Chuck Yeager

I read a Bio of him long ago. One thing that stuck with me was his description of his eyesight and technique for spotting German fighters at great distance. Once he spotted them he would maneuver to come from above and out of the sun without telling the rest of his squadron so that he would have more targets.

2-3 years ago I went to the site of where he grew up there is a very big house there now. Perhaps he built a new house for his parents?

Chuck was my neighbor for 17 years before he moved a few miles down the hill after his wife passed. We talked a lot about all his adventures, he was quite the pilot, gave me a lot of stuff, even a bottle of scotch he brought back in the SR 71. The last time I talked to him at the Vets diner he didn't quite remember to much but I guess we will all get there with old age. A good Man.

Very fitting-I am re reading his biography(for about the 10th time). I would have loved to have met him. I am just fascinated with his life story. I always like how free wheeling they operated back in those days, compared to modern times with all the rules and regulations. In his book he says that there will never be another era like that one, and how he 'bent' a lot of the rules back then. Amazing life. Mark.

I think his best moment was breaking the sound barrier for the first time with the X-1 rocket dropped from a B-29 at high altitude.......seeing the video footage of the few seconds approaching and going past the barrier would have been the breaking/stopping point for many, I'm sure.

Second would be his deciding how high he could fly the F-104 Starfighter straight up before he lost consciousness, flamed out, or lost aerodynamic stability.

His biggest disappointment.....too old to be an Astronaut.....no doubt he would have been 1st on the Moon if they let him.

Just finished watching "The Right Stuff". Sam Shepard played the part of Gen.Yeager.

I saw an interesting interview with Chuck one time where he talked about his love for hunting and how it helped him in combat because it taught him to lead his targets.

He talked about growing up in rural West Virginia. He said in first grade at age 6 every single boy in his classroom would bring a .410 shotgun to school. They had a gun rack in his one room schoolhouse. After school got out every boy would go hunting for squirrels to have for supper that night.
