Need a brake drum - 35 Chevy

I?m in search of a rear brake drum for my chore truck. 1935 Chevy 1.5 ton. I?m not worried about having enough metal to turn it or anything (it never goes above 45 miles an hour and is used to feed cattle each day) but the keyway on my right rear one is badly egged. Too many years of choring in the mud with tire chains. The axle itself is a bit muggled but it cleaned up pretty good.

I?m guessing if I can?t find one I?ll make a new keyway 180 degrees from the current one but I hate to leave that egged keyway. I?d think it will crack there eventually. Anyone got an old truck in their junk pile?

If none are found, the hub is likely cast steel. It will weld just fine. 6013 and short passes to keep it cool. Then broach it for a just bigger size Key. on the axle and hub/drum Jim

Couldn't you weld up the egged keyway to strengthen it after you cut a new one? Finding a drum is going to be a pretty tall order.

I?ve thought about taking it up a key size. That might be my best bet. If it was 50 years ago and still hauling heavy loads (she?ll haul 110 tortured bushels of wheat if I remember right) I might be worried. It?s 85 years old - I just use it more like a pickup anymore. Those mechanical brakes aren?t fun with a heavy load let me tell you.

I know Loback closed his truck scrap yard in Scranton but last I knew he was still around. He might know of something. That was a few years ago so maybe he's not around anymore. Maybe also try Weeklys salvage in Carbondale. Not Autoland. He used to have older parts. I have a couple old truck frames that've been sitting in the junk pile since before I was born. No idea what they're from. I'm guessing Ford because that's what most of the other stuff I've found is.

There's not going to be an easy and permanent fix if you can't find the parts needed.

I know you want to keep it original, but maybe there is a chance you could find a very low ratio newer rear end that the brakes and wheels could be adapted to. That would give something to work with, a better design. But it's probably a closed drive shaft, another obstacle...

Or I'm thinking cut the center out of the drum, machine a new taper hub and bolt the old drum back on the new hub. But without seeing it hard to say if that would be practical. Then you still have the less than perfect axle to deal with.

The axle could possibly be turned to clean up, the key way oversized, the new hub made undersize to fit.

Like I said, no easy fix. I was afraid this day would come...

I would be willing to help with the machine work if you can pay the shipping.

Mite check with a place west of junction city ks. don't know if it's still there, called "Easy Jacks" I bought some parts for my "34" delux master some years back.
