Case maxxum 5140 hyd. Prob.

Hello everyone. This week My blood pressure is still up and the maxxums is down.
When I turn the steering when moving forward or backwards drive is lost, unless very high revs are used. ( This causes a bit of bother when reversing into the shed ).
So I started by changing hyd. canister filter and cleaning sump pre filter. I cut open the canister filter ( just to see) and it was full of metal fileings and a little bit of other rubbish my magnet would'nt pick up.
So I stopped there and sent it off to the menders.
5 weeks later I got it back with a BIG bill for lots of parts and The dam thing still would not reverse around the bend into the shed,
BUT THEY SAID IT WAS DEFINATLY FIXED.
There mechanic came and put pump tester on and said FLOW AND PRESSURE OK but pump must be weak and needs a new one BIG MONEY.
I then searched the internet as a friend said he had seen something about this and I found this site with the hyd. diagram from Richard.
SO MY QUESTION IS. HAS ANYONE GOT AN EASY TO FOLLOW HYD . DIAGRAM I CAN USE SO I CAN CLEAN AND CHECK ALL THE LINES PLEASE

Welcome to HT
If I sent my tractor to repair shop then recieved a large bill & also recieved the words tractor is repaired t. Then the repair place stated tractor needed a hyd pump replaced for a lot of $$$$ the owner of repair shop would have the pleasure of conversing with my ATTORNEY.

the Maxxium service manual I have cost me right at 800.00 when I bought it,, something that is needed to do the test/checks you speak of for sure,,

Sorry to hear that you are having problems with
your 5140. I had one, and ran it over 8,000 hours,
then it would have days when it would act funny. I
had friends that also had the same model tractor,
and they started to also have the very same
problems. Two of them took their tractors into the
dealership for repairs, got them back fixed, and they
came back with bills over &15,000.00. Seems the
internal hydraulic pump is unique to this model
tractor, and the cab has to come off, and tractor
splitting make these repairs. Possibly the down fall
is the one common hydraulic fluid. And the internal
parking brake. As the parking brake wears out,
where can worn brake parts go but into the
hydraulic system? I traded my tractor in on a new
tractor, as I didn?t want to be stuck putting a huge
sum of $$ into a old tractor. Excellent tractors when
new, and a engine that can?t be beat, but they are
now nearly 30 years old. I think CaseIH would like
to forget about Maxum tractors from the 1990?s

Does your 5140 have neutral in the steering
wheel shuttle shifter?

Had the same issue with my maxxum. Late
model, not sure if the earlier ones are the
same.

Pull the seat out and on the top if the
tranny casting is a block with the pro and
forward and reverse actuators. Front right
hand corner (standing behind tractor) is a
plug, behind it is the shuttle valve that
controls the forward reverse shift clutch
grab speed, mine got stuck open, so no
hydraulic pressure as the valve dumps oil
back into the rear end. I used a small
screwdriver to flick the valve back into
place.

Repairing or tryen to repair the new stuff has gotten way out of hand . Then ya factor in the problem of todays Mechanic's/Tech's they either don't care about the work they turn out or they really don't know what there doing . I have had dealings with the new generation TECH's at the Dodge dealership with the War Dept.'s car as there are some things that i can not do since my scan tool will not cover this new of car and at my age i AM NOT going to buy a new scan tool to try and say up . Every stinking time i am forced to take it in and i get it back i have to GO BACK and they have to redo what they did , not just once but several times . One of my OLD Customers hit the big time with a vary large sum of bucks coming in when he leased his mineral rights and he bought a new Dodge 1 ton and a new Case I H tractor with a fancy cab and 4 wheel drive and a Factory loader , around 300 hours the problems started and the tractor was sent back to the dealer and so it began . He would get it back and a day or two later it was back in the dealers and each time it came back they told him it was fixed . One day it drop kicked him a week out of the dealer when he needed it the most and i had to go get all his stuff out of that tractor and install it back on one of his OLD tractors so he could plant his corn and make hay . After two weeks he went in to see when he would get his tractor back and was informed that the parts needed to make the rapines were on back order and it could be up to three months before the new parts would arrive . He needed another tractor NOW so they knew they had him where the hair was short and sold him another tractor , this one was a little bigger . So i had to go down and change out the baler controls and corn planter controls on this new one . Two weeks and with only four days in the fields this new one went down and had to go back and be split to make repairs . Since it has been split they now can not keep it from wanting to do self splits and keeps coming apart. I have heard about the price of the hyd pumps for your tractor . Myself i have never worked on any of the new stuff , Just the OLD STUFF ya can fix with out selling off your first and second born .
