Oliver 550 Motor Stuck

Started on the 550 today, got the head off, she is pretty bad. New sleeves and pistons for sure, one valve is stuck.

Odd part is, 3 of the pistons look like they have moved a little bit, but I took a block of wood and tried to drive one piston down and nothing moved. Now the fun begins.

The water jacket is pretty rusty, wondering about dumping some CLR or something in it to clean it up some before pulling sleeves out.Chris

use straight vinegar in the cooling jacket. it is not as aggressive as an acid cleaner, a lot safer on the block.

If the engine is out of the tractor, take the crank out and try to get the pistons out the bottom. Some engines allow enough clearance to do that. If not, cleaning the bore both with a rust remover, and hone or wire brush on a drill. If there is no ridge they will come out. a ridge reamer might be needed if they are worn to the point that the ridge locks the rings. Once out, a sleeve puller might get them out. If not, and the crank is well protected, a stick weld bead placed at three or 4 places around the sleeve from the bottom up causes the metal to shrink and they will pull then. Do not try to make a real weld, gust a clean quick pass from bottom up. Jim

Chris, pull a couple of main and rod bearing caps and see what the crankshaft looks like, it will most likely need to go to the machine shop. I would just pull the engine, get it on an engine stand, take the rod caps off and drive the sleeves and pistons out from the bottom with a bar and a big hammer, the give the sleeves a whack and they will break away from the pistons, been there done that. Merry Christmas, Chuck

Give your self a big break, save many hours, and unless you are really in need of a major full body work-out, split it, attach a $25.00 stand, roll the front ahead, and take life easy.

If you can't roll the crankshaft because the pistons are stuck, getting the rod caps off will be a challenge. The last 550 motor that I tore down was stuck like yours, I had it on a stand and still struggled to get it apart. It took a combination of removing the caps I could, beating on the pistons, and removing the sleeves and pistons as an assembly. Later I broke the sleeves to get access to the piston pins to save the rods. I would not have wanted to try it with the engine in the tractor.

A long as you are getting new pistons and sleeves, I would just break up the pistons in place and then remove rod nuts and remove the connecting rods. Pistons can be broken easily by drilling and chiseling.

By way of u-tube, what a guy found to be the best solution for freeing up rusted parts was an equal dose transmission fluid an acetone.

Yeah, and that guy got it here on YT from young fella Old.

Atf and acetone remedy has been around as long as I can remember.
Gramps told me about it when I was very young. I had a stuck 66 engine. I didnt even try to get it free. I think I drove a piece of all thread through the pistons and pulled sleeve and piston out the top as one. Piece of channel or something equivalent with a couple blocks on top of the block and you have a puller.
