curious smoldering silo

I have been driving past a neighboring silo since June and it's always billowing smoke. I believe it was deliberately set on fire and somewhat demolished as it is toppled over and the sides caved in. Anyone care to guess what it is that has been burning steady for seven months now, what can get that hot and stay that hot, would silage last that long? Coal? It is putting out some long term heat.

Most likely spontaneous combustion inside the silo caused by silage that was put up too dry. Remember one in Wisconsin that did that. People watched the burn line go down and the smoke go up. Ruined the silo. Concrete stave.

Spontaneous combustion is a possibility. If a Oxygen free storage system, it could have caused the collapse as well as sustain the smolder. SIlage has celulose and that brakes down to sugars and that is a carbohydrate (read flammable) The presence of moisture both limits the rate, and promotes the breakdown. Jim

It self combusted, like too wet hay, it was too dry silage.

Oxygen starved, it does a very slow burn, more of a smolder.

Can?t put it out, water won?t soak in fast enough, the heat boils it off. Possible to unload in some situations but that?s dangerous to do.

Silo is likely wrecked from the heat, so not much to do but let it burn.

Local BTO filled a silo with some wheat he wanted to make silage from. He did two things wrong. Let it get toooo mature and let it dry to much when he mowed it. Couple weeks earlier and/or mow and cut immediately and it would have been good stuff.

Now he's too big to mess with silos.

One of our neighbors barns burned down in 1987, old 40 foot silo beside the barn full of grain caught on fire, and smouldered away all winter. In the spring , they Brough in a excavator to clean up the site and knock down the old silo. Once the silo came crashing down, there was a big burst of flame, as the still smouldering feed in the silo got air and came to life.

One close to me burned for over a year. Once it burned its self out they relined it and kept on using it. It was neat to drive by and see the red glow.

October 23 a bin caught fire from a bad fan motor. They emptied the corn, and it was still smoking last week when I drove by.
