Difference between IH 55 and 550 chopper

Can someone on here tell me what differences there are between the IH 55 and the 550 forage harvesters? I am looking for a 550 but came across a 55. It will be awhile untill I can go check it out. I bought a 650 with nice heads but the base machine is rough. I know that all the heads interchange between the 3. We would like to fix a good one with a direct cut head (mowerbar) for cutting oats late in the fall. I have a manual coming off Ebay. Tom

More shielding in the PTO and gear box area. I believe the 550 has all feed rolls versus the upper apron assembly that the 50 and 55 had. Early 55's had a 4 lug LH wheel while later production had 6 lug. 50's had cast iron knife holders while 55 and 550 had steel. I just saw a pretty good 55 sell a week ago today at auction. 130 dollars with both hay head and 2 row corn head. I bid it up to 100 dollars but just was not a need with a 50 in the shed not getting any use. Anybody that has any 50 or 55 parts I would be interested.

No, I did not. I was pretty cold once I saw the grain drill sell which was the purpose of me going so I left right after that. The 55 chopper was just one of those interesting moments while I was there. It was 1000 RPM which affected me buying it for parts which it was in too good a shape for but the bidding was not there like on quite a bit of the other equipment. Back to your question you could check the area newspaper assuming they show deed transfers like the Geneva paper does. The alternative would check the county records online if possible or go to the Wayne County office building in Lyons.

Yes I am interested. Give me a call some evening 608-623-2851. I think you also do some tractor repair and I might have a project for you as well. Thanks Tom
