I saw a red pickup go by this morning and it shot into the dirt road(level B ) Well the dude walked a 3/4 mile back to My
place and ask if I could pull Him out -- I quess I can -- that snow has been rained on and all else so I was as stuck as
He was-- dug My way out and it took Me an hour to get back to Him and pull Him out -- He never offered one penny -- So I
told Him If I ever catch Him in there again I would bury His truck with Him in it with snow and check on Him the spring -
He said thank You and left - sign at the intersection says level B and the snow is 2ft deep plus- Who raises these
Idiots? sorry for the rant but I cant believe the stupidity ! Roy

Well be for Thanksgiving & while putting items for winter, I pulled out my tire chain's & installed on the J/Deere 60, The old J/Deere A I brought back to life after 30+ years & installed the ones on the little J/deere M. These 3 we don't use much on the farm, but I use all 3 three cutting & hauling wood. The partners on the farm said I was crazy, I said I'd rather install them on a nice day the a cold snowy icey day. Well today we got snow, freezing rain. The farm is located in a valley on a gravel road which now has 1.5" ice & snow packed. Guess who & what was needed to get the 2750 4wd & loaded manure spreader out of the ditch that went for a REAL ride going backwards after it spun out 2/3 of the way up the hill infrt of my house? When I spread with that tractor in the winter without chains I kept couple 5 gallon buckets of sand that I dumped in the loader bucket for the same reason. Just spread a tad of sand when in doubt, I learned my lesson sliding backwards with that out fit once. Now we have a New Holland spreader with 2 bent web bars & and kinked tongue..

I have pulled a lot of fools out of snow banks, ditches and unopened roads. Most don?t have a cent, or even snow boots, mitts , shovel or even a good winter coat to keep from freezing. I go and pull them out, just so they are gone, and not hanging around. Never hurts to help out some poor fool that gets into a jackpot. I had three boys, and I bet each of them got pulled out of some place they should?ve been, by some kindly old farm fella.

My brother and his buddies, used to make sport of pulling people out of ditches during bad storms. They would drive around in a 3/4 4x4 looking for people who were stuck, they would get payment up front and the car owner would have to attach the chain themselves. If you couldn't pay they would let you sit in the ditch. FYI, this was before cell phones, so there was no easy way to call for help.

I see the same thing where I live. My dirt road runs North and South, with big open fields on the east and west sides. Oftentimes in the winter visibility is near zero, the road is drifted shut, and somebody is stuck with no gloves, boots or hat. Usually when I see a vehicle stuck on the road, I call the Police and let them deal with it.

(quoted from post at 18:20:14 12/17/19) What's level B? Don't think we have that around here.
round here, a level B road is a minimally (if at all) maintained road. They definitely are not plowed in the winter. Anyone trying to go down a level B road, especially in winter, deserves whatever happens to them. Level B roads are usually, but not always, indicated by a sign. Unfortunately for me, my GPS is not smart enough to know the difference between a county highway and a level B road. I have learned this more than once. You sometimes have to watch where it takes you. If it starts to look sketchy, turn around, while you still have a place to turn around.

Roy,

Awww, Did you hear a bell ring? You may have helped an angel get its wings (at least according to some old movie). It's the first thing that popped into my head.

It was nice you did a kindness to somebody.

Our family farm is on a well used highway. My dad pull out more people than I?ll ever know about, Fixed as many radiator hoses, gave gallons of gas, changed tires etc. one time this lady had a flat tire. Dad dug all the stuff out of the trunk so he could get to the spare, Jack and lug wrench. (Remember when they were all in one spot). Jacked the car changed the tire. Then as dad was jacking the car down, the lady says not to bounce the car so much, it will wake her boyfriend up. Dad kicked the jack out and left.

Reminded me of once about 15 years ago someone pounded on our door at 3am on a zero degree night.

It was a guy and a gal who said they got stuck in the snow about a mile north. They smelled like they'd been hitting the bottle. They'd left another gal and a 4 year old girl in the car. I figured the quickest way I'd get back to bed was to go bail them out. I got in a 4x4 pickup and headed up there with them. What had happened, was the neighbor had driven into a field road with a tractor to get hay for his critters, and they saw his tracks and thought it was a county road. So they'd driven out into the field and got stuck.

The car was a Chevy Cavalier, and I hooked a tow strap onto it, plus a chain to keep from getting the pickup too far off the road. I told the gal in the car to put it in reverse and be ready to move when I started pulling. I dug out with the pickup and when the tow strap hit the end of its stretch that little Cavalier came flying out of there like it was on a bongee cord. I had to kick the pickup in the butt to keep out of the way.

Anyway, I got them back out on the road. They went through all of their pockets, came up with 7 one dollar bills and said they'd be back the next day with more. Of course, I never saw them again.

AMEN, Bruce!

And if any of the other "kind" folks that replied ever had kids, boys or girls, they'd be lying if they said otherwise. Hypocrites abound.

Well if this is show and tell............

My wife and I reside....very rural location....

Six weeks ago, 9:pm ...heavy rain...33 deg F windy, a total stranger knocked on our door...

Multiple Tattoos, looked like a Hollywood Actor as in a ...DRUG DEALER..........

I asked him to step inside, and offered him dry cloths........

He refused the cloths, and stated he had been 2 miles down the road with his family... a family argument had erupted...thus he was pissssed off and left....

Asked him his name... I recognised the name from forty years ago.....I had known his father...who was a very good person..

I asked if he was sure he knew where he wanted to be driven to.....

...approximately 10 miles South of our home...

I asked my wife to call our closest neighbor if I was not back in 45 minutes and give them my destination ...

We arrived at the destination.....WELLLLLLLLL..

This stranger looked me in the eye and said "I'm flat broke"...."is there any way I can pay you for being such a good guy to such a bedraggled looking guy like me Sir"
I answered no thank you Sir.....I have been in need several times...it was my turn to pay back........:)

The wet scraggly lookin gentleman asked "are you married"..."was that your wife back at your place"

I answered yes Sir.....NOW the GOOD PART...

To bad the stranger says........as you can see there are so many single women here....so much great WHISKY... all you can eat...take your pick of what ever is your fancy......

I "asked what is the Celebration Sir"...

My buddy has invited all his Harley Owner buddies to a two day all you can eat, drink, and sleep over....

Park the Truck and lets get at it!!!!!!!!

My 1988 FORD 3/4 ton bolted from nothing to MK 1 and I was headed home......

Last week I was in at a Bank......the same stranger recognized me and again said if I can ever pay back the favor let me know.........

Bob...

In my state they have ?minimum maintanence? roads.

Must be what a Level B Road would be there?

Paul

What they call a class four here. Use it at your own risk. The town does minimal maintenance, won't plow it, and gets their undies in a big bunch if anyone else does. New this year they wanted to require full commercial liability insurance for anyone to plow. I think there was enough backlash that they gave up that idea.

We live nearly the last house on a "dry-weather road". There are people that try to mud-hog, tear up and stick their vehicles, then walk out and want somebody to come help them year-round. -A couple of big barking dogs in the yard has improved the situation greatly.

I've pulled out, given rides home etc to a lot of people in my area.I live on a pretty tricky road when snow and ice is on it and everyone knows I have tractors and I'm glad to give them a hand. The strangest one was one night about 1 AM my house dog started growling and then I heard the back door open. Before I could grab the .357 a guy yells please don't shoot I need water my car is on fire.I hollered back get all the water you can,got dressed, saw his car up at the end of the driveway jumped in my old Land Rover. He had run out the road and hit a small tree and his car caught fire.Had a fire extinguisher in the LR shot it on the fire and hooked to his car and pull it back in my driveway off the road.Gave the guy a ride home, told him it was a very wise decision to yell about needing water when he came in the back door.

I remember when I was a kid all of my older cuz's and their friends had CB radios and I had a toy base station. I could hear them talk but couldn't talk back. Anyway one day we had a big snow and the police shut down several miles of US Hwy 70 because so many people were stuck and off the road. Well they and their friends all had 4 wheel drives and they were going around pulling people out for a little money much less than a wrecker would charge. Well one lady in a Corvette was just off the road a little bit but was stuck. They told her 10 bucks to get her going and out. She said wonderful that would be fine! Well they pulled her out and when they unhooked her car she jumped in and locked the doors and said F You! Well that didn't go over very well with a bunch of ole country boys. They all pushed her with her tires spinning back off the road down in a ditch a lot farther than she was to begin with and told everybody over the CB what she did so no one else would help her! I hope she learned her lesson. They said if she had said before she didn't have any money they would have got her out anyway they did some more people.

My son and I were deer hunting on a military reservation. It was snowing all day and getting pretty deep. Some MP's came by in a humvee and said we better follow them out. I said we have 4 wheel drive. They laughed and said, "All that means out here is 4 wheels deeper." We followed them out.

We live on a fairly busy county road, about 20 years ago we had 6-8 inches of snow, had a warm day, almost 40, put a hard crust on the snow, then day or two later got 4-5 inches of light knowable snowmelt next day had 20-30 mph wind, I watched the road in front of our house drift shut in about an hour. I go to town and buy 10 gallons of kerosene to heat the shop and 10 gallons of tractor gas. By the time I get home first car is stuck, lady is using our phone to call a tow truck. A 2wd Ford Ranger spins to a stop just feet from our driveway. Guy picking up his Wife from 3rd shift job, he only had a few 1 Dollar Bill's, I pulled him out with my tractor and told him to keep his money. I pulled 6-8 other cars out of the ditch, even my driveway. Finally this jerk in a Coupe DeVille Cadillac spins out 100 feet from my driveway, walks up to me and asks how quick I can pull him out. I'm not sure I could even budge him, I get done with the last car before him, The guy starts saying "Your just doing this to use your old tractor, your having fun with this, Bet you'd do this for free." I said, No, I'm doing this because it's 4-5 hour wait for a tow truck, County won't plow the road with all the stuck cars. A tow truck is $100 minimum, I'm O-K with $10. Son hooked the chan, My little tractor, Farmall Super H with weights & chains spun a lot pulling the Caddy thru a foot of snow, but the jerk didn't pay anything. I put the tractor away. County has put up snow fence every winter since then.

It hurts when through their own stupidity they get hurt or their vehicle gets damaged, and they show up the next day or a week later with a lawyer in tow. Happens more often than you think.

They can't be grateful that some kind person helped them out of a bad situation, and take the damage/lumps as a lesson learned. Nope... Someone's gotta PAY!

In the 70's we had a few years of severe snow, it was bad enough that roads were closed because the local, county and state trucks couldn't keep up with the snow fall. Some 4x4 trucks got in the habit of cutting through fields where the snow had blown off to get around road closures. One morning I could here a truck in the neighbors field trying to spin out of a snow drift. I thought it mite be the neighbor so I fired the Oliver 88, grabbed a chain, a shovel and started out into the field. I found a guy in a Chevy 4x4 that was high centered on the snow and couldn't get out. When I backed up to him I ended up high centering the tractor, so I dug it out. After I pulled him to the road and unhooked the chain he put his truck in gear and drove off. Never did figure out who he was.

Roy, it is second shotgun deer season this week. Every deer hunter thinks he can drive anywhere and not get stuck. The more remote the road, the more hunters. Have a great week.

oh yea nothing new got three of those roads around me close, all 4 wheel drive does in most cases is it makes for a longer walk. most all of us as kids that grew up in the country have also done the dirt road thing. I became the billfold joke guy most time not always they would offer to pay, I simply would state what in the billfold sometimes it was dollar sometimes way more, one fellow paid out his full 120 dollars and said boy I not doing those roads ever again, laughed and he went on, told him Five dollars would been fine but he emptied his wallet, he was very thankful also. for years I was the school bus help guy also if it got into trouble. kids always loved to see the big tractor come, I never gave it thought its just what you do in the country

I will say what should have been said in the first place. Good job roy for helping out someone in need. So what if they were dumb for getting into the situation not. Sure, if they had the means they should have offered some cash for the help. As for the fellow who said he was stupid for not asking for money up front, I hope you dont need assistance when your wallet is empty...

Sometimes it feels good to help someone truly in trouble, sometimes times it is just better to help trouble leave.

Perhaps you should have negotiated compensation before you left the house.

I have helped unstick people a few times and I have needed help too. I don't remember of any money ever changing hands ? I hope I at least offered when it was me but I can't remember ? Only one I do remember was the interstate battery delivery guy thought he could make it up my drive after a snow fall. I had told him before that if it was snowy DO NOT attempt it ! I worked a long time getting him out. Was able to work the loader bucket and slide the truck over to where it could back out without going over a embankment. He never offered anything, not even a battery ! I wish I would of made him call a wrecker and pay that bill and then have to explain it to his boss.
Anymore I have thought twice before offering a ride or help and mind my own business. Too many hijackers and sue happy people out there.

Used to carry a tow chain in my van. Didn't mind pulling someone out if I could.
Now days, I wouldn't know where to hook a chain on todays cars.

I hesitate to pull out a stuck vehical because the driver might be impaired by alcohol or drugs and I would be enabling someone who might cause a death by driving in such condition.

Gave up being a nice guy many years ago . During a bad snow i was being nice and dragging IDIOTS out of the ditches and off guard rails this one night out east of town on the bad hill . It was so bad out even with a 3/4 ton 4x4 with weight in the bed and plow hanging off the ft. good tires a detroit locker in the rear and a limited slip in the ft i had to dawn the iron on both ends . My rule was YOU HOOK it to something solid . The hill looked like a demolishion durby track . The vary last person that i pulled out did not hook the chain to something solid and as i was just taking the slack out off came the whole lower valance . He sued me had to go to court take a mouth piece with me and my at the time girl friend to beat this case almost lost my insurance over this . Now had that state cop not been there it would have been his word against mine . It was so bad that night you could not even stand up on that hill as the state cop found out when he stepped out of his car and no wrecker from town come down the hill as there were three of them in the ditch up the hill from where i was and ended up dragging them out as well. Traffic was backed up 12 miles to the east of the hill and in town east bound state street was a parking lot . Once we got everybody off the hill the state salt truck had to use back roads to get to the hill and back his way up putting his whole load on the hill. Nope aibn't pulling anybody out , but i will call a wrecker for then and maybe the state patrol also.

Yeah and they might be santa clause or the tooth fairy. C'mon get real, you just gave the dumbest reason I have ever heard for not helping someone in need.

Neighbor was driving on a backwoods country road in the winter & it was icy. Came upon a car in the ditch. Thought it best to check it out & found a young lady in the car. Asked her if she was OK? She said yes, I am OK but I need help getting my car out of the ditch. He said I am always willing to help a pretty young pregnant lady out of the ditch. Oh , but I am not pregnant she replied. You are not out of the ditch yet either!

Sounds like McCoy.

Been there. Way way WAY too many idiots out there. Friend of mine pulled over to the shoulder on an interstate. He was like a 1/4 mile beyond the accident. He had a hand full of road flares. He set the fuses and then got some more from the cops when they got there. Walks back to his truck and there is a darn nice impact on his truck. Yup it Doesn't pay to be nice.

One time a UPS truck slid in the ditch. I got the tractor and chain out and pulled him out. As soon as I got the chain unhooked, he took off. Never said thanks or even waved! Some people seem to think our only job is to rescue them from their stupidity.

I will always do whatever I can to help somebody I?ve been given to much in my life to be so selfish I can?t give a little back to someone who needs a hand and I?ve been helped a lot of times to . Are there stupid people that do dumb things ? Yes . You?ve never ever made a mistake In your life And needed a hand ? I doubt it . So that?s how I see it . Now if the same guy does the same thing three days in a row it might be a bit of a different story on the third day .

I pulled a pickup with plow out of a ditch one year. The next winter I was out of state. My wife returned home from staying at her mother's for the weekend. There was a 4' bank in front of the driveway. She was carrying our 1 year old over the bank and trudging toward the house when a guy shouts out "can I plow you out"? Wife says she doesn't have any money. Guy replies " no problem, your husband pulled me out of the ditch last year". Sometimes it works out.

We live on a dead end road. I literally have had dozens of people stuck that I have pulled out. I never say no. I always hope that if I?m ever in the same situation that someone would do the same for me. I had a young guy at 12:30 am in pouring rain I pulled out . He offered to pay me and I wouldn?t take anything. The next day he brought a case of beer and a $100 coffee gift card.I have pulled a coach bus out with my dozer. 70 tourists on the bus and no one offered anything, not even a thank you.
Always help people. That?s what my parents taught me.i think that is important nowadays.
Cheers
Martin

It was McCoy. They drive their heavy
stuff,tanks or whatever on dirt
roads. When the snow falls and drifts
it might look like 6 inches but it's
covering a 2 foot ditch.

Yup and you can be back in places that make for a long, long walk out.

SV, I am 70 years old and there are not many days that I don't go rushing out of my house to help someone in trouble. That is just the way some of us are wired. Sometimes you may have a bad experience, but that doesn't stop you. Other people don't want to be bothered, that is just their nature, so they try to make them selves feel better by telling a story about an event that supposedly justifies their view. When someone helps me and I offer money sometimes they may act offended that I even asked but I know that they really like being able to turn it down, and that is their rightful privilege for going out of their way to help me.

WGM, you are not the only one that doesn't know what he is talking about. Have no such thing as a level on any road.

(quoted from post at 18:25:51 12/19/19) WGM, you are not the only one that doesn't know what he is talking about. Have no such thing as a level on any road.

Leroy, our roads here in NH are not classified by "level" but they are classified by "class". A class six road is one that is not closed but may be subject to gates and bars, and is not maintained by the town, I used to maintain a part of a class six road, including installation of a culvert, in order to have access to a hay field . A class five is a town maintained dirt road and a four is a paved town road. Leroy, I won't tell you that you don't know what you are talking about just because you are not familiar with road classifications in every area in the country.

Why would that many people go down a dead end road? Does not make any sence to me. Cannot be that many people living on that road for to have a legimite reason to get on it. This area of the country any dead end roads are clearly marked so people without having a legimate reason like living on it to be on it and how many of the people living on it would have that many visitors? Sounds like they need to get with the sign program and put up sings that you can see.
