Watched a slide lecture on CSPAN-3 tonight. It was at a reunion of veterans of the Military Assistance Command Vietnam (MACV). This Deere tractor showed up during the presentation. The slides were taken in 1965.

Are you sure 1965 is correct? The tractor appears to be a 2020 and they were not introduced untill 1966. Maybe it is something that was built in Germany and not a 2020? Tom

The reunion stated their service in 1965. Could not get a better photo of the tractor. I took a digital pic of the tv screen. I wasn't concerned about the model but by the way they were transporting it out in the boonies.

This is for sure a 2020 made in Dubuque. 2020 made in Germany started in 1967. From 65 to 67 Germany made 710 and they were very different.
Tractor in your picture has 4010 wheatland fenders so it could've a prototype or very early model.

I cant imagine how the would have loaded that tractor and implement into that barge (if that is what it is called). May be drove it in when the barge was flooded and then bailed out the water making it float BUT I dont think the sides are high enough for that . I have heard of floating a jeep by driving it in to the water on top of a tarp. Then they gather the tarp up around the jeep and tie it there . Next they pump out the water and it floats . This tractor and implement is much heavier. It would be a finicky balancing act as well -- it could easily start to tip and then flood and sink.

I remember seeing a lot of big tractors while there with parachutes draped over them and people living under them using them as houses. They sure couldn't use them in their rice patties doe to the water. I always wondered why our country would give them something they could not use thinking we were doing something great for them. I'm not in any way trying to make this political.

I think this photo shows " where there is a will there is a way" couldn't be easy loading that or sailing it down the creek but they wanted it bad enough.........something we spoiled American forget sometimes. !!

The comment about the rice patty: I have a couple of Branson tractors made by Kukje (Now TYM) in S. Korea. I ran across a picture of one in a Korean rice field, with the long lug (rice) R1s, bogged down to the cab door in the muck.....geez. No way do my tractors get subjected to that kind of abuse.....something to think about when you read the operator's/owner's manuals on when to change what.
