Late corn harvest

Late corn harvest . Neighbour was giving it an attempt last night . Last I heard moisture was still in the low 30 s. Thought the moisture would have been lower after temperatures froze .
Corn was planted in late in May due to a cold wet spring. Being this close to the lake there was not a killing frost until mid October to start dry down.

It was a very tough year, and continues to be for some.

For me the beans would not dry down, they went to 17.5% and stayed there, was near November took 3 good freezes before they dried the driest I got was 12.8, after
some snow.

Corn dried to 19-22% which isn?t bad, I had about 5 acres that were 24-27% planted as late as I?ve ever planted corn so amazed it yielded well. The trouble with corn
here was no place to haul it, road construction funneled us to an elevator that slowed down to dumping 3000 bu an hour all the faster the drier moved. When you are in
line behind 3-9 semis to dump at 3000 bu an hour you don?t get much done in a day. Combine sat still 8 hours a day.

Late corn harvest, how about the soybeans?
There are still some need harvested just straight south of Moberly, Missouri. Pretty much straight north of the Correction Center, on the way to Higbee, MO. DOUG

Different climate along the North East shore of Lake Huron .

church friend has some soybeans 19 to 20 % moisture local elevator won't take anything over 15 % he doesn't have any way to dry them.
he said I guess be there next spring

Still a lot of corn in SD that's not harvested. Need a good freeze so the ground will support a combine. jal-SD

Cold weather as a rule, will not hasten drying in the field. Corn needs to be fully
black layered and sunny dry weather will remove 5 points a week. If you remember
the harvest of 1992, the year with no summer, corn that was harvested in January
was still well over 30 percent moisture. This year's corn is kind of unique in that
the starch content of the kernal was not as dense due to the lack of sunlight to
facilitate photosynthesis, leading to a loss of test weight as it dried, rather
than the opposite which is more commonplace. Some driers are also experiencing
moisture bounce back, were the moisture of dried corn will go up in storage due to
the less dense starch which hampers moisture transition out of the kernel. Lots of
new situations emerging this year, and were not done with it yet!

Hope your neighbour gets their crop off.

100 ac of corn to do yet....that's all we planted due to the late spring. 2/3 will be ok was testing 22% hand shelled 3 weeks
ago. 300 ac of beans to do yet, most are seed. Still debating what exactly to do with them, seed company is quite anxious to get
the one variety as there is a good demand for them. Our other beans have been in the 17% to 22% area and have spent some time in
the drier.

Here in my corner of WI all the corn is about done. I was south of Dubuque Iowa today and saw several combines cutting soybeans and some corn still standing. We are done field work except for hauling bedding bales and have some manure that needs to be spread. The driest corn I had was 19-20 and I plant short season to get bedding made. Tom

Couple days ago I went out to open up the fields so I could pick corn. I just got the combine running and the engne started knocking and blew. Guess my harvest will still be a bit later. I have another combine as a backup but it's taking a while to get it running again. 14 acres of soys to go and all my corn.

Lot of guys this year filled bins with wet corn to dry later. Or piled it on the ground. We were about a day away from doing that when we finally got the dryer fixed well enough to run. Used it briefly last year but mostly has sat idle for nearly 10 years. Funny how things can break when not being used.

All our corn was off early, with moisture around 18, but yields that suffered from the cold, wet spring.

Buddy just finished beans last Saturday, about 30AC that followed an asparagus crop, planted in June, I think. They got 850bu off, dry enough to go into the bin, kind of a bonus.

You guys have been in good shape for moisture. Beans have not been under 17 for moisture and corn has been 25 and up to 30 still have 100 acres of corn left. Finished beans this week.
