Star coupling

Hi, I had a fan belt break on my zb600 diesel motor.
To change it I had to separate a star joint (?). It has a rubber 4 pt star that fits snuggly between 2 steel hubs. I slipped the belt through the open joint and got it on the motor. I put the joint back together, started the motor and the hub got hotter than he??. I loosened the pump mounting plate bolts thinking it could be out of alignment. There are washers that fit under the pump bracket but I don't know the order. I'm going to let it run a bit loose to see if it helps. What c o you think?

If you are referring to a "LoveJoy " type coupling, you will need to adjust/shim the pump to get it properly aligned. up and down and sideways. By running it loose you will just destroy the coupling and then the drive hubs. I hope you haven't lost some of the shims.-------------------Loren

We have those all over the place at work. Lovejoy makes a bunch of different types and it sounds like yours are a little out of whack. Too tight or are "working" and generating heat. This is their video. Way overkill but you will understand. They need a tiny bit of flex. Remember, these are not a universal joint. They provide just a little flex and give in drive systems. They also have rubber and hard plastic spiders.

Lovejoy

The guys are correct in that they are Love-Joy couplers. And they are a real tough item. We used a lot of them where I worked and we actually lined them up with a dial indicator. We were within thousands of an inch. and I mean like within five thousands. They would run for ever it seemed.

Yes, .005 is max, .002 is better! One time at work a couple of guys that didn't understand alignment came in and changed a motor on a pump, the next morning I had to replace the coupling and re-align it!
