Gibson tractor

Bought a 1946 Gibson tractor A. All original in great shape has a Wisconsin engine. Came with a Gibson plow and cultivator. Has tiller steering. Needed a little TLC to get it running but what a great little tractor. Never heard of one before this. Few years back bought a small 6 passenger circus cart. I plan on pulling the cart with the tractor in our local Christmas tractor parade. Anyone else have a really small old garden tractor?

If it has tiller steering and a Wisconsin engine, it is a Model D, not an "A". I have one that I rebuilt the engine on last year. Considering how few were built, I find it surprising how many are still around. The really rare ones are the "SD" models, that had a steering wheel instead of the tiller, plus a hood and fenders. Gibson also built several larger models in the 15 to 45 HP range that are extremely rare. I have ever only seen 1 of them and it was sold to a collector in Europe. Gibson was in business for only about 4 years.

I've got a couple of Economy garden tractors and a small disc that hooks to a 3-point.

There's still a lot of them around because they are so damn hard to kill!

I have a few "D"s (a "D" will have 24 inch rear wheels, an "A" has 16 inch rears), I used to have an "SD" (it had a hood, but still had a tiller bar to steer with, the "Super D" had the hood and steering wheel). I also had an "E" which had a Wisconsin twin instead of the single and bull gears in the rear axle to lift it up to row crop height. The "E" was the size of a farmall cub. I shoulda kept that one....
They are neat little machines; everything is out in the open and ruggedly built. Water loves that rear axle casting though, it'll get in there and rust out the brake bands and destroy your ring and pinion. That hard-to-find ring and pinion can be replaced with one out of a B.F. Avery, Twin Row Wards or General tractor and is a direct bolt-in replacement EXCEPT for the pinion flange- you'll have to adapt it to your original drive line.

I have a Gibson Model D. I believe it to be a 1948 model. I don't own any equipment for it. I also have a David Bradley Tri-Trac. It is a 1954 model. It has a dirt turning plow and cultivators on it. I also have a Planet Jr., two wheeled tractor. I have a I also have a Gravely walk behind tractor. They are all fun to use.

There is no way to describe the feeling of backing one up with tiller steering. With your head facing backwards, hand on the tiller, your hand=brain-eye connection gets stupid.I had one about 30 years ago with a complete set of attachments.I got it for hauling it out of a barn that was being demoed.A man here in town has one,he is close to me but I have only seen it when he brings it out for a parade.

I have an Osco 65. My grandfather bought it new about 1948. He let me have it in 1993, about 6 months before he passed. Looks similar to the Gibson. 7.4 hp Wisconsin industrial engine. Centrifugal clutch driving a 3 speed transmission with a shaft driven rear end. Also have original plow, disc, and cultivator.

After reading the responses, I've got what's probably a Gibson D, with the Wisconsin, tiller steer that someone has homade a wheel to replace, and the larger rear tires.

I got it for dragging it out of the woods. Getting it restored is on my to do list.

The factory was in Longmont,Colorado. It burned to the ground in 1948. All records, drawings, etc. went with it. So there isn't much info left. However, they were a popular little tractor and have a huge following. You seem to find em about everywhere.

I have several Speedex garden tractors with the sliding engines and one with the tiller steering.

Good morning: The first Gibson I saw belonged to my uncle, near Lapeer, MI. It had Wisconsin and tiller, no hood. I drove it a little, about 4 years ago. I also saw a Gibson at a small local tractor/antique car show near Jackson, TN. I don't recall all its features but I think it had a hood.
