Corn maturity

If a company advertis's a 85 day corn, what does that mean, i have been out of farming 10 years,there were 5-6 guys chatting at the local cafe, some of them city guys, that never farmed, i said it will take a average of 85 day's with average Growing Degree Days, from the time you can row it, until it gets black tip, which is 32 % moisture, they all looked at me like i was nuts ! Was i wrong or off base?

Yes, planting date to black layer or full maturity.
