Yes. You should have removed the SMV sign.

They changed it a few years ago in MI. It is now something like a 60.00 dollar fine now for having it exposed during hauling.

George;Way back when we were getting new tractors in the back tractor if driven on the trailer had the SMV covered. If your's is removable take it off. If it is a decal, cover it to be legal.

A dealer told me if anything is moving over 45 MPH in Kansas it has to be covered up or removed

We really can not blame the public for not paying any attention to SMV signs when SMV signs are displayed on trailers moving at highway speeds or are mounted on stationary items like mailbox posts as driveway markers.

NO!!!! Also now here in NY since the newer tractors can travel more than 25mph they also need another sign placed beside the SMV sign stating their maximum speed. Signage needs to be on both tractor and towed equipment and documentation of max speed for tractor and towed equip.filed in the tractor where it can be presented to law enforcement if stopped.----------------------------Loren

ss55,
You bring up a good point. How many people have a clue what a SMV sign is? I know a few county and state cops even a INDOT inpector. Next time I see them I'll ask they have ever given a ticket for SMV on a tractor going over 25mph or do they have bigger fish to fry?

Most farm supply stores will sell SMV signs with mounting brackets. Most likely those brackets will have a triangular mount. Bolt one part of the bracket to the
tractor and slide the sign with the matching bracket in. My New Holland tractor came with two mounting brackets, one facing the read, and one mounted on the
inside of the left fender. When in the left fender bracket you only see the edge of the bracket from the rear of the tractor. If needing a SMV for a parade or
tractor ride, a bracket fastened to a hole in the draw bar works very well too.

True, not many people recognize a SMV sign. Many state's drivers manuals describe them along with the other road signs, but few of us read those manuals unless we need to take the written test when we renew a drivers license.

if your 560 has fenders, attatch the SMV to the left fender. If not,put it on the left side of the rear deck. Make appropriate mounting brackets.

ss55,
Most of the time I renew my license over internet.
Last time I had to go to BMV, take a vision test and show many ID's for new Fed mandated license to fly.
Never had to take a written test.

Most of the kiddie cops out there now in NYS don't know (and often can't seem to grasp!) the difference between a motor vehicle and an implement of husbandry. I think the chances of them understanding anything about a "35" on a tractor is pretty slim. That's probably not covered real heavy at the Academy.
