Hauling hay

We rode about 100 miles away last month
to a farm on the GA line to buy hay.
Bought 8 round bales. Sold 2 to our horse
lady , ran 2 through the square baler ,
and planed to do the same with last 4.
Had a lady answer our ad about square
bales, she wanted to buy all we had, only
16 left. She asked if we had any more so
I gave her a price on the rounds too. She
asked if we could deliver. 50 miles round
trip. Didn't do too bad on the deal,
doubled our money and got to test the
baler.

Interesting how stuff turns over in our economy.

Pickup looked like it was loaded.

Hope you could salvage more of the windrows after the first baling pass.

Nice Fords!

Paul

We did save more of it. It got beat up pretty good after unrolling the bale, running through the baler and it not knotting the first time. Had to rake it up again, last bit was forked in the baler. One round was $30. Got 15-16 square bales out of each. 5.00 each.

Grandpa, put a shout out to NCwayne. I am pretty sure that he was the one who was building a bale processor a few years ago. It was for a big operation that was re-baling rounds into small squares. They just removed the strings, set them on the conveyor and another conveyor fed the loosened hay right into the square baler. He could set you right up!!

The hay market has fallen flat on it's face here. Can't hardly give a bale of hay away. These are two stacks of first cut alfalfa hay that knowone wants.<

I could sale a 1000 square bales of grass for $5 right now but I am out. I had to bale up some cover crop to have enough to get me thru the winter.

In my neck of the woods and really across VA, there is a terrible shortage of hay. Prices are skyrocketing.

Might want to consider a craigslist ad in VA - especially northern VA and the tidewater area. It?s not any better in NC. People are bringing in semi trucks with hay from NY and PA.

IMHO - you should be able to move that hay to an out of stater for top dollar.

Good luck,
Bill.

It is sort of funny how one year one cannot bale enough hay and then the next not be able to store the hay since one has to much. Last year I baled my neighbors place due to not having enough hay and this year I still have a field I could bale hay in since I ran out of room to store the hay

It looks like your baler pick up is missing a lot of hay. The pick up teeth should be lower to just above the ground, not hitting the ground though. Mark.

Mark, try reading through the other posts. As hay gets worked over more leaves and stems will break making it harder for the pick-up to lift it.

So profit of $45 per round bale. How much time do you think you have total, per round bale, buy the time it is sold? Also, does that nicked running the truck or equipment? I make about the same on straw, so just wondering.

(quoted from post at 14:17:31 12/02/19) Better look out some place may freeze over since I agree with you this time. LOL

Well. that is bound to happen every few years I suppose.

I remember a few years back you posted about a cattle feeding operation who had started buying a lot of feed stuffs in your area, is that outfit still going?

LAA; That was a beef operation. They fell flat on their face also. They left a lot of local farmers hanging for their money.--------------------------Loren

Showcrop, I understand about leaf loss and all that, but, that appears to be a lot of missed hay. If my baler missed 1/4th of that ,I'd be very upset with the baler. I baled some very, very short 3rd cutting this fall, and did not miss hardly any. Usually short hay falls off to the sides, but this appears to be missed because the pick up went over the top of it. Just saying. Mark.
