Trying To Start The Gen

I finally got around to trying to start that old generator that I'd posted about here a week or more ago. No luck yet as the old 9 hp Briggs does not have any
spark. The battery hooked up to the cables barely turns the motor at all so its all rope start. Looks like I need to do a little more work on the ignition.

Emery cloth on the points , then a piece of paper run over them to take any filings out and there will likely be spark. I agree with you 100% There are good tutorials on YouTube showing exactly what to do.

(quoted from post at 07:02:22 11/22/19) I would clean the points 1st.
You might have noticed me using the points file in the video. So far it has not worked but I'll try again. Somebody commented I could remove the condensor and try starting it without, just for a test. I might try that if all else fails.

Not trying to be funny. But make sure you have gas in it.I have had many brought to me. With no gas or the gas valve shut.If it does have a oil shut down system. You could try unhooking the wire to it.But I don't think that one doed.

Pretty sure I included that in the video as well. The point where gas was dripping from the carb and I opened the choke. Its not a big priority but I'll work on it as time and weather permits.

Sorry yes you did. I get ask so much for help sometin I forget. Some things I have seen over the years.
Gas leaking past the carb. Flooding the engine.
Points so bad you could not clean them. No mater how much you tried
Dead spark plug
Bad oil safty switch. But I don't think that one has one.

Is it possible that the starting rope can be wound on the wrong way and the pull turns the engine backwards?

My reason for asking is that I've been witness to a group of fellas trying to start one of those big open crankcase engines and they were cranking it the wrong direction. Some one suggested trying the opposite direction and it started right up. They were cranking it by hand similar to the way you crank an open fly wheel John Deere.

I would put in new points, condenser and plug. I wouldn't waste my time hoping the old stuff might work. And taking the condenser out is not an answer to any problem. You'll just have a crap spark, if any at all.

.
Its a good thought Ron but no, I am sure I've got the rotation right. The notches in the starting pulley are shaped so that the rope will only hold if you have it wrapped in the right direction. This rope slipped a time or two because it is plastic and a bit too thin.
