Inline hydraulic filter

My loader tractor has a prince pto pump going to a 3 spool valve to the loader. I don t have any filter, was thinking maybe I should put one on this. I ve had several others set up like this with no problems, but I don t want to damage anything. I don t use the hydraulics for anything other than the loader. Do I need one? If so what line do I put it in?

An inline filter goes in the return line.

It doesn't protect the pump or any hydraulic components, it just slowly cleans up the oil supply as it passes through on it's way back to the tank.

There may be a suction strainer inside the tank, or you might could add one if there is room and have access to the inside of the tank. A suction strainer will protect the pump and the rest of the system from the big stuff, like something dropped into the tank, or a piece of something that makes it's way back to the tank.

The best case is to have both, but you do what you have room for and access to.

Make sure the filter will handle twice the flow capacity of the pump because there is more flow going back to the tank as the lower is lowered. Rule of thumb also is used a filter rated at 30 micron for filter size for gear & vane pumps, 10 micron for piston pumps and if you go with a strainer 100 mesh is a good size. More questions? Installing a good filter is a very good idea!. J.

When I built my wood splitter I put the filter in the suction line to protect the pump
as I had welded up the tank. Steel was not that clean. It works just fine but when it
is cold it is slow until the oil warms up. But it has been used for over 40 years too.
I have had to reseal the cylinders twice in all those years. Still the same pump.

Filters are usually in the return line to the tank. Anywhere else and you can have high pressure. A pressure gauge installed before the filter will tell you when it is
getting restrictive. Usually in the 0 to 10 lbs. or there about range. When you see the pressure build above when the filter was clean it is time to change it. Typically
a strainer is placed in the suction line and may be in the tank where you don't see it.

On my MF 202 with a crankshaft driven pump the filter is on the suction side after the tank and before the pump. I know many other Masseys are like this.
