plow day question

Have wondered when a plow day is planned do the organizers request all plow bottoms to be the same width; all 14 or all 16 or ??

This to make the result a little more even and easy to work on the next pass on the field.

I've watched some plow days on You Tube and the job they are doing is horrible.

if your talking plow competition, I don't think they judge on the plow its the job they judge. they want the furrows straight and flipped over nice and even and depth, and the headlands straight and even in and out of ground.
if its just a plow day fun thing I am sure any sort of plow is welcome.

The "horrible" job is from improper setting of the plows. Some guys have never pulled a plow a day in their life. They have no idea how to set a plow(or even know it needs to be set). The tractor wheels are wrong, some plows are too big for the tractor, some have worn shares that wont penetrate, some guys try to plow down to China, the front bottom is buried while the rear is just skimming(I've seen it all).If a plow is set right,it wont matter what width it is.But it's all about 'seat time',haveing a good time. Our club does a plow day every year. Not a big deal,we welcome all and help them to set properly(if possible)Try to teach a new skill to some folks. Some guys bring a disk or harrow instead. For some guys, that's the only time they get to drive their tractor, other than a parade, show or pull.So chill out and let em have fun. As I'm usually the guy who disks it after, not a big deal.

The plow day I go to is horrible . Newer plows plow deep and the old ones plow normal . The dirt is waves but they come in with a chisel plow and bust up the field afterwards .

You guys need to close your eyes/ignore the 'quality' of the job. Focus on the fact these guys are having fun. Some are learning about plowing which is becoming a lost art.Use the opportunity to teach. Stop complaining about quality/a poor job and some guys will leave, never to return. We want young people to comtinue,so teach, take em under your wing, show em how,the right way.

We ask that they bring 3 bottoms or less, Tractors from early 70's or older, plow , eat lunch, most fun of farming this year!

At the plow day I attended, they just asked that you had a 4 bottom plow or less, and a 1960 or older tractor. It seemed like a big field to me but we were done before lunch. Then when we were done, a modern 200hp Deere with some kind of finish tool went over everything we did in what seemed like a matter of minutes and made a nice looking field out of it.

They were all about having a good time. I had just finished restoring my plow. I didn't know how my G would do with it or how the plow would do, but the organizer told me "don't worry about it. We're here to have fun". Really set me at ease.

BINGO! that is the bottom line on the plow day I host. I have a big disk that smooths out a lot of sins. we have a nice lunch in between plowing sessions, and everybody has a good time.

All plow days that I know of are hosted be a antique machinery club so it pretty much limited tractors of the 50's or older and with those you might get a couple of 16" plows but most are 12" or 14". And sometime the host club will open it to other neighboring clubs and it is club members only plowing. So no big new tractors or plows.

one that was held in my area even had horse pulled one, it was all about have good time field did not matter, that be taken care of later in single pass or two if needed with modern tool.only held it once, it was fun but the liability ins pretty well takes fun out of it

When you are a member of a tractor club if they have the right insurance you are covered as it is a club sanctioned event. Same as any meeting held anyplace or any show put on by the club or even in a parade as a club event.

You would not be pulling that plow in the ground we have around here. And in the time frame of when the tractors are from a 4 bottom was an odity let alone a 5 bottom. And most plow days have 30 acres or less to plow and 20-25 tractors attending so those as big as yours would have all the plowing done before some got there to participate. single bottom more likely to come than a 4 bottom with most 2 or 3 bottoms. We don't have a hundred acre or larger field ever avaible and putting plows as big as yours in would kick out all the smaller tractors.

At some plow days the host farmer reserves the right to set the plow if the owner doesn't know how to..
There are none in my area..
