Thanks to all the helpers. I have heat now. I added about a 1/2 gallon of coolant. It just didn't look low but hopefully that was the problem. The heater hoses feel warmer now too.
 
Check your radiator cap to make sure that it holds pressure. Or better yet, replace it with a name-brand part.
 
Now get some stop-leak and put in it, following the instructions, and you will be good for a long time. Many years ago our son had a Ford Explorer that did the same thing, added some stop leak and end of problem.
