Had to shoot it.

A couple of months back, I had something get sucked into the intake of the 283 in my 65 chevy C20. Upon disassembly, I found a damaged piston. At the time, I decided it would be a better option to replace the piston and rings, than to go with a salvage engine. Apparently that was a bad call. When I finally got it reassembled and started up, it still sounded (and smoked) like a perkins diesel. I called around and the neighbor has a couple of 70's model trucks with small blocks that he is parting out. I guess I will have to go that route. I think I will save the original engine for a full rebuild.
My engine hoist didn't work. Somehow the plug came out of the cylinder along with all the oil. I had to use the farmall. I will probably need to get the hoist working for reassembly.

Sorry to hear it didn't work for you.

I would sure want to hear the replacement engine run before making a deal on it.

Something that old is very likely to have high miles or stuck rings from sitting.

your overhead hoist looks a lot like mine, except different model. Nice thing about a sm chev engine is most every one up through sb 400 will bolt in.

Keep in mind a 400 small block is external balanced must use 400 flywheel or you get vibration. Any other small block through the seventies will be fine. Don't know about newer engines. Also 400 has counter weighted harmonic balancer also.

You can still get a Targetmaster 350 from some of the mail order speed shops. This would be a brand new engine and, with discounts, will be around $1500.
Before all the nathsayers chime in, yes, it's made in Mexico. Yes, you can rebuild a small block for less than that. Yes, my brother's wife's brother's second cousin had a bad experience with one.
Yes, GM will not warranty them when installed in an older vehicle. (What did I forget.....)
