FORD 5000 SOS PROBLEM

Okanogan

New User
I want to thank you for any replies and help in advance. New here. I've searched the archives but haven't located our problem. My Ford diesel 5000 with SOS started giving us transmission problems today. We have both Reverse 1 & 2, but none of the 10 forward gears although it seems to slightly grab in 10th. Never gave us issues before. No metal in the oil. Filter looked decent. The manuals I have so far haven't been a huge help. I knew my Jubilee inside and out but this one is fairly new to me and it seems these SOS are a little complicated. Thank you!

Okanagan, welcome to YT! If you were to share your location you may find that one of the resident SOS experts is just down the road from you.

Are you anywhere near n/w WI? I have an
SOS from a friend's 5000. Has a broken
shift cable, otherwise in good
condition. Could probably sell it to you
for less than repairs to your would be.

Sorry folks if I'm replying wrong, still figuring this forum out. Eastern Washington state. I may take you up on that but would like to figure what is going on first.

Thank you

No we haven't. But one moment we had everything, the next we had only R1 & R2 and no forward gears. Would a band issue play out like that? My dad was on the tractor, moved a couple bucket fulls of dirt fine and went back for one more...again, I'm learning here so please forgive me but wouldn't a band issue start with either slippage or some forward gears but not all? Thank you!

A further question- can I rule out traction disconnect because I have both reverse gears? Thank you

We had a SOS years ago, when they work correctly they are great, but when they malfunction they will make you rip your hair out. I have been in and out of the SOS
trans a few time but years ago. My best guess for your problem is "A problem with the main shaft, could even be broken" or "worn splines on "B" carrier." Hope I am
wrong, either problem means a lot or work, but I think I am very close to finding your problem.

Just an after thought, I just looked up my IT Shop Manual, it is IT Shop Manual FO-20. It covers the SOS trans very well, it covers problems and fixes to complete
overhaul.

When I spoke to Page Implement in VA, one of the highly recommended repair shops I've found reading through SOS threads, he was certain splines were not the issues because I had both reverse and would have nothing if splines were an issue. Would that not also apply to the main shaft? I came across the troubleshooting guide on Arthur's tractors last night (although the manuals I've found I don't offer this trouble shooting guide) that agreed with you- splines or main shaft. But the VA gentlemen's perspective made sense to me. If it's too in depth I need to send it out but want to make sure it is before doing a double split on a tractor as winter approaches with no shop to work in around. Thank you again for everyone's input. I appreciate it so much.

Okanagan,
Re-post your troubles on the Ford board as Ultradog suggested. Ask for "Bern" who lives in Western Washington and helped me with my 5000 SOS. There
are some simple diagnostics that can be done a hydraulic test gauge (ports are already machined in the transmission housing where your feet rest.
That will give you some real data to work with. I can scan and email you pages from the manual if you need them. You'll see "Send email" in the lower right corner of this post and that will link to me.
