Here are a couple pictures of the SMV I threw together. Nothing fancy but it gets the job done.

holding them on with a nail would work for a few min here, the wind would send them flying the magnet is ok as long as you do not leave it on in the weather,, as it will Rust big time under the magnet if left on very long,,
 
Thanks for the picture! I was thinking about making something like that, but I wasn?t sure if it would work. So now I?m going to have to make a few.

You could use a 10 inch gutter spike. Cheap and easy to get at the big boxes.
 
I?m wanting to use a 10 or 12 inch buy 3/8 diameter spike I seen them at the store the other day for 2$ each
 
still not going to stay if the wind catches it,, but go for it,, maybe the wind does not blow where you arelike it does here
 
I don?t think the wind can behind it enough to blow it off a hay bale my biggest concern would be ever getting it pried back out of the frozen bale without running the sign
 
I like the idea of using a threaded rod with one end sharpened. The end that sticks out you can buy or make a pull handle something like this. I'd recommend brazing it fast.

Yup...did that with one of mine too. The thing is those plastic ones don't stand up too well. Break easily. I need to look around for metal ones if they still make them.
