what does it mean when white smoke comes out exhust running wide open?

Are you losing any coolant? White smoke usually means coolant is entering the combustion chamber.

Most often if the engine is still cold, it is failure to ignite one cylinder, resulting in the diesel not burning in the cylinder. A faulty injector, or poor compression will cause that. If it does it warm, it could be coolant. Look for coolant loss, and the sweet smell of antifreeze. If it is a puff of white when at idle, I suspect compression issues. If steady white warmed and running fast, I suspect coolant. Jim
