Most often if the engine is still cold, it is failure to ignite one cylinder, resulting in the diesel not burning in the cylinder. A faulty injector, or poor compression will cause that. If it does it warm, it could be coolant. Look for coolant loss, and the sweet smell of antifreeze. If it is a puff of white when at idle, I suspect compression issues. If steady white warmed and running fast, I suspect coolant. Jim
