Maintenance . Cleaning up the battery cases and cleaning and tightening connections . Any one ever stuck the volt meter leads the top of a greasy dirty battery case ? I used widow cleaner and water to clean .

These bomgarrs battery?s are on their second year and they seem to holding up fine we will see what the next five years holds

How would 2 acids work? Wouldn't that be like 2 wrongs to make a right? The baking soda would be a base while the Battery would be an acid. Thus neutralizing the acid from the surface.

Yes, you are supposed to use baking soda. I sometimes use oven cleaner which is caustic, the opposite of acid. This might be a good place to debate how dirty a battery stored on the floor gets.

Something I have found on the batteries with removable caps, run the electrolyte a little below the full level indicators.

That is especially important for off road use where the battery gets a lot of sloshing and banging around.

As long as the plates are covered is all that's necessary.

Like cat-guy, I was always taught to do the chemical neutralization and as a result I keep a box of BS around for such and it works....with moisture to activate it, you can watch it bubbling as it neutralizes the H2SO4+H2O Sulphuric Acid-water fluid. Agree on keeping your battery surface clean with your terminals being that close together. There are articles on low voltage creepage across the surface of batteries due to external moisture and contamination.

those bolt on terminal ends like in picture you have were my worst nightmare, once went away from that style my battery issues on equipment pretty well disappeared, just saying, I always covered ends with grease, sure made a lot difference also,

I normally stick bolts up through the bottom and put two flat washers on then nuts and you can clamp them down tight .

On a greasy oily battery If you take a volt meter and put one lead on the ground and the other lead anywhere on the case and it will read voltage

Yes! You know, forum software that includes a "like" button is not all that expensive if the store owners here wanted to change. I guesss the catch would be all those who are so set in their ways they cannot even handle modern view would quit though. But you are spot on with your comment.

Hello svcummins,

Battery maintenance 101. I have posted the voltage readings you get on top of a battery. Moisture will make a connection from the positive post to ground, and will discharge the battery. The higher the voltage, the more discharge.
Next time you need to clean the top, wet it with water and use baking soda, or any soda of your choice. Wait awhile and rinse off!

Guido.

I need to get some baking soda . I thought I had some battery cleaner In an aresol can but I didn?t so I had some window cleaner and lots of water .
