Delco-Remy 12v starter

Absolutely. Make little drawings of EVERY single step and part. If you are just cleaning it up make sure you put a litte lube on the bushings. Also replace the brushes. Gently clean the commentator. Those little shims are crucial if your starter hasn't been messed with.

Where the ground cable hooks up to on the inside that bolt has an a round head and goes up against a plate it does not press up against it tightly allowing for intermitant contacting. There are no arcs or burns there.

sorry, but I don't understand , the only Delco that I know of having a ground cable attachment are the 42 MT's in semi trucks , me email is open if you would like to send photos and further explain.

I was thinking of putting a copper shim between crown of bolt and flat plate inside of starter to make solid contact?

Never seen one grounded that way. I would put the ground wire on one of the bolts that hold the starter to the engine instead of where it is now

Do you have the Delco number of the starter?

Tractor model number?

(I'm trying to remember exactly how things are set up in that endplate to connect the "ground" brushholders to that ground stud.)

"old", this is VERY a typical connection for an HD diesel starter where the ground battery cable runs all the way from the battery direct to the starter brushholders.

A lighter system ground wire runs from that stud in the end of the starter to the engine block or frame for the charging system and lighting system grounding.

Guess I have never run into one then since I have NEVER seen a ground like that on any of the diesel stuff I have been around or I did not notice it being that way. I know not of the stuff I have or ever worked on where that way

That number isn't "right" for a Delco number. Could it be 1114117?

ANYHOW, I believer you have a "series 40MT" starter and the copper bolt should be permanently attached (spotwelded or silver soldered) to the brush holder.

Yours has apparently been torn loose.

done this repair?

That's like saying has anyone worked on a Chevy....delco remy has made thousands of different starters over the years. Gotta atleast give an application or model to narrow it down

Parts are readily available (thank goodness for the 'net) and it ain't rocket surgery to swap in a new brushholder assembly.

What and where did you search? Check with local parts stores and electrical repair shops. I plugged "delco 40mt brush holder" into eBay and there are some listed. A straight web search has many sites with them. 40MT brush holder ring works as well.

This site has a breakdown of the starter to help you with finding the right one (number of brushes vary). https://www.jnelectric.com/publications/printableunits/Delco 40MT.pdf
