But I decided I?d be just like Winnie the Pooh and
stick both hands right in the old hive and see if I can
get some honey 🍯

SV,
I don't think you like to stick your hand in the honey pot and stir things up. You like to stir the septic tank. By the way, it takes a septic tank stirrer to know one.lol.
The other day, I truck with a rollback in the city of Terre Haute hauling a terramite, no tie downs. I wish I could have taken a pic.

I see a lot of people do that and I don?t know how they dare do it . Yes ytosha and ytdot need a good stirring I like the septic tank that includes both organizations 🙃🙃

(quoted from post at 22:56:34 11/02/19) I have yet to see anyone post a link to FMCA rules that says you can not use straps on wheeled equipment.
YTDOT rules that Bubba told your brother in law do not count.

John, I cut and pasted the whole load securement section a year or so ago and asked for help in finding the part about chains required on wheeled equipment. The chain advocate at that time posted that he gave up.

Take the tail of the strap and fold it over into a foot long bunch then before tightening down the strap tuck the bunch between the straps on the ratchet, then draw it down. Makes a nice looking job and the end of the strap is less likely to come undone. I'm headed out west this week to get a load of hay or straw, have not heard which one yet or location, either South Dakota, Kansas, or Colorado, but I think you are more Idaho aren't you?

John,
Because of Barney on YT DOT, I've been watching how loads are secured. Yesterday on I70, I observed semis with built in wide ratchet straps every few feet along the side of trailer.

I like to follow one law, Newton's first law. Short version, "Something in motion tends to stay in motion".

Yes I use straps. I also use chains to comply with Newtons first law. All my loads I use G70 chains to stop any object I have on trailer from going forward.

I've seen too many tragic accidents where driver was killed or injured because they stopped and what they were carrying didn't.

I had 2 students in a wheelchair. Both girls were passangers when car was in an accident. One girl was in back seat and dad had put cement blocks in trunk. Car stopped, block didn't, broke her back. The other girl was passanger in front seat. Car stopped, no seat belt, broke her back.

I've read that about the same number of people die from drunk drivers, speeders, and People not wearing seat belts. How many YT Barneys don't wear seat belts yet they are athorties on securing loads? I'm glad my seat belt isn't a G70 chain.

When I trailer anything I chain and strap my loads with 8 different tie points. No way do I want to stop and what I hauling doesn't stop.

Some people think secure loads only apply to trailers. Think about this, your pickup stops real fast and your firewood doesn't. Like the cement block in trunk, that wood could hit you. That's why it may be safer to fill truck with snow instead of an unsecured load.

SV, I did find a site with the rules. Looks like we might need to consult with a rocket scientist while securing our loads! FMCSA dot.gov 393.100 to 393.130 heavy vehicles and equipment.

(quoted from post at 19:17:04 11/02/19) The earth is liable to fall out of orbit ! Straps cannot be used on anything with wheels

I was stopped last year by the county DOT. I did not have my skidsteer chained down in my dump trailer. He said I couldn't move the trailer until I tied it down. I said I only had straps, he said that was fine. Two straps, one front, one rear and none on the bucket. 6500# machine.

I've pretty much given up trying to advise anyone of anything to do with FMCSR type stuff here. If they don't hear exactly what they want then they get all defensive. And trying to explain why some stuff is covered and some stuff isn't and what a CMV is vs a private vehicle...it's just too much hassle. Straps are fine, so are chains and for some stuff rope is okay! Leave it at that and run!

Apparently you?ve never read the ytdot hand book ? Bubba wrote and his other brother bubba puts it on here

I liked the way Geo secured his new tractor! Chains and straps. When I haul my backhoe, I chain the front and the back with 3/8 inch hardened chain and then put a heavy strap on both buckets. A cop stopped my boss and his backhoe only had two chains on the front and the back. The cop told him that he had to tie down both buckets, but he let him off with just a warning.
