Just a guess, but looks like it'd make a dandy oven for wood-burning stove. Maybe used to heat modeling clay or hardware parts, or maybe to simply super warm your hands on a super cold day.

Then again, maybe he melted all their Halloween candies into one GIANT candy! :shock: *lol*
 
I would guess that it is the base of a chicken waterer. A tank and float would fit on the inside ring of the casting with the float and valve in the recessed area. A heat source could be placed under it to keep it from freezing in winter.
 
Looks like the base of an old coal brooder coop heater. The upper cast iron cylinder and the sheet metal hood are missing. We raised 2000 layers every year with six of those old heaters converted to natural gas by my Dad. I still don't understand why we didn't burn down the chicken house.
 
ABD is right -- heated chicken drinker -- You would place a kerosine (wick) heater under it - inside the little door -- might have burned down a chicken house or two -- Roy
