Engine needed please read on;

Engine needed please read on: I have a I.H. 1974 model 674 diesel is a 239. Like this tractor bought it cheap but now after taking the engine apart and looking at it well have to say it is best to locate another one. I do have a good block was thinking to salvage parts out of they engine the tractor came with. The problem came to my thought if they threw the third connecting rod and still ran the engine with three cylinders. Chewing up the balancer gear and the balancer is completely gone to. Crank is dust and so on go the list. Thinking it is best to find a engine or rebuild the good block I bought a five months ago. looking for a way to afford this mess I got talked in to buying and restoring. any I deals may I ask I can get a rebuild engine from a tractor place but the price is high after having it shipped to me. Just wondering what you might suggest. Your suggestions will be read and be considered thanks for reading.

This is just an idea, and I am NOT a mechanic, but were there any trucks that used the same engine? Farm trucks maybe? Might could find a salvaged truck for parts or engine.

You said you were "restoring" the tractor. Are you trying to keep everything OEM or is a re-power possible?

Finding a local used engine that has a good crank, rods, and head if yours has been hit by a wayward piston is going to be cheapest. If the head is good, a used short block might do. You need new pistons and a good serviceable crank and rods. Bates Equipment in Bourbon Indiana may be a resource. Jim

I have bought a good block from All State last 5 months ago. My plan was to rebuild the block I had bought from All state. Did not know and till I torn the old engine down that now I am starting all over. The rebuild engine they have listed for 10,649.00 plus a shipping charge to be added to the bill. If I am thinking right maybe I can rebuild the block I got from them and save so money.

This sounds like a good ideal but I am not to Shure how many trucks had a 239 four cylinder diesel engine in them. I do know this engine was used in I.H. and Case tractors.

I am thinking the same thing you have posted. To me I need to think about the tractor yards in northern California and maybe in around Carson city and Wilmington Nevada. Just may be I might find an old attachment that might have this engine on it. If I can not than I will have to rebuild the engine block I got from all state tractors.

I've found the cheapest way to go with motors is to find another tractor with the same motor that is beat up but a good running motor,buy the whole tractor and combine the best of both.Paying 10K$ for a motor to put in that tractor is crazy in my opinion.For 10k$ you can buy a whole lot better tractor than that and have money left over.

Hi, D-239 engine was used in many IH tractors, 544,2544,574,674,684,685,695,4210, 5000 and 5500 Windrowers and Industrial models 2500A/B.
There is also the D-206 from 624,584,585,595 and 3230 that should bolt in but have less HP and the larger more HP D-246 and D-268 engines should bolt in as well.

The American Pickers were out in Northern CA at a walnut farm on last episode. In the barn there was a glimpse of a couple of old IH tractors. Maybe you can find that place ? Good chance you could find what you need at a junk yard around here but being in Ohio shipping would be outrageous. May as well call and ask anyhow. TMS Stoller tractor 330-669-3676 they have lots of used IHC parts.

Don't know where you are, but you might check out 'TRACTOR HOUSE'. They have several complete tractors, many with loaders on them. One is a gas tractor, the other listings don't say. DOUG

You can buy good running tractors of that model all day long for half of that rebuilt engine price. 5,000.00 shoyuld buy one of them.
