Which is best, 1 or 2 chains?

I use cevis and 2 chains to secure Jubilee. Would it be better to use 1 chain through clevis?

Please post a pic if you have a better way to secure tractor that doesn't have factory tie points.

I use two chains with a binder on each one. Tried just one chain with a binder on only one end and felt like the chain was getting hung up and not sliding to tighten up on both ends. Bought some used 20 ft chains online for $15 each and cut them down to make two 10 footers.
 
You are hooking two chains to the same point, so in actuality if the attachment point fails, you have the same result as one chain if that failed. The benefit of two chains is it limits some of the side movement that could occur from rendering of one chain running through the shackle as well as if one fails you still have one holding.

Either way as jon f mn posted using bolts instead of hooks is a no go.

Also I would install the shackle the other side up so that gravity would be less likely to help the pin drop out if it comes loose.
 
Once again the bolts are a no no.
The point of using separate tie downs is to use separate anchor points.
Personally if you changed the bolts to hooks I would like your setup.

With that said the DOT does not like tiedowns that terminate on the cargo.
They allow it but do not like it.
They would much rather you loop the chain threw the shackle and hook both ends of the chain to the trailer.
Both ends can be hooked to the same side of the trailer if you want to keep the 4 point tie down.

By DOT rules if a tie down terminates on the cargo it is only rated at one half of it's working load limit.
So a chain rated at 3000 lbs will only count for 1500 lbs of holding power.
If you go from a trailer anchor point through over or around the cargo and back to the trailer this same chain is allow to hold the full 3000 lbs.
 
I've never seen a pro driver loop the chain back connecting both ends to the trailer. How would you ever get the chain tight?

Heck I've had pro drivers that had NEITHER end of the chain attached to the trailer! The chain was anchored to the trailer by the load binder. Been doing it for decades, crossing state lines and passing through inspection points without issues.
 
Hate to tell you but if DOT tells you a 3000 lb chain is only 3000 if doubled he is full of you no what. Chain rating is single no matter what. you wrap and come back and the week link is at the wrap and no stronger anyway. there is no law that states the chain should not end at the cargo. Do it all the time and have NEVER been questioned about it.
 
Kinda changing subject, How are safety chains supposed to be secured to trailer, welded or thru slot with bolt inside welded to frame. I have seen both ways.
 
I don't know how they can think to get away with that as it never stood up in court yet when I went.
 
I have a tractor that had the drawbar and the drawbar mount damaged from a trucker chaining like that and driving on a bumpy road, was expensive to just partly fix to a usable state.
-The vertical load rating on drawbar is very low, bends and will strip bolts out of casting.
-Loading a shackle in bending at the pin is a no-no
-Pin aimed down on shackle and not wired not a great idea.
-Two chains on one tie down point on tractor is only one tie down even though the pair will stop it from going side to side to the limit of the shackle swing.
-Bolts are no good as noted.

Really best to get chains long enough to go around the castings and cross them side to side. Stop by local fire department and ask for some old failed fire hose to slip over your chains if you're worried about paint.
 
Terramites come with welded tie points for shipping.

This is the Jubilee. No factory tie points.
Question is one chain through clevis or 2?
 
I use hooks to chain. Instead of bolts what else could I use to attach short chains to clevis?

How would you use t chains on the rear of Jubilee when only thing that is solid? Any thing attached to 3 or won't allow chains to be attached to axles.

Hitch is only option, What can be done?
 
I don't tie down to drawbars, I've seen too many fall off for various reasons. I also don't use clevices unless necessary for the same reason. I would go around the axles, left rear to right trailer and right rear to left trailer and do the same on the front of you want to use 4 chains.

I think you can still buy Grade 70 chain hooks, hadn't heard they were NLA. I expect you are only using Grade 70, or better, chain.
 
Hmmm, the DOT needs to read their own rules again. If you go to the statutes, the aggregate WLL is 100% for a chain that connects to both sides of a vehicle. If the chain connects to the load and returns to the same side of the vehicle, you only get 50% WLL.

Since the tractor only weighs about 4500 anyway the way he has it hooked is over kill for the tractor. Now if you wanted to I suppose you could weld a couple of hooks under the tractor hitch plate and hook to them or you could snub a chain around the plate and pull forward then pull back on the front axle to hold it tight. I have hooked a chain around the axle on those tractors. You do have to watch out for the brake shaft on them so you don't bend them with the chain like on the N series models.
 
Also when I load them I have so many on I have to watch what else is on the trailer and how I can even get a chin on at all. With 6 tractors on you are limited to the locations. And one is all I can get on sometimes. With old tractors like that there is a provision for only 2 chains on the whole tractor needed anyway.
 
I bought four 24" long by 2" wide axle straps from my local Menards and loop them around the axle. They have metal D ring at each end of strap and work great and would not scratch paint if you have a show tractor. I then use a strap at each corner of the tractor.
