Case 580C Radiator and Block Temperatures

I replaced the coolant and thermostat in my 580C yesterday and noticed when I drained the radiator after running the tractor a bit the first coolant to drain was cool and the last fluid to drain was warm.

I ran the tractor for about 1.5 hours today filling in a ditch with loose material and used an infrared thermometer to measure the temperature of the block, upper radiator hose, and lower radiator hose. The air temp when I made those readings was about 45F and the needle on my temperature gauge was barely into the green.

The readings were as follows:

Block = 176F
Upper Radiator Hose = 87F
Lower Radiator Hose (near water pump) = 77F
Lower Radiator Hose (near radiator) = 47F

Do these readings seem abnormal given the cool air temperature when I made them and, if so, what might be the problem?

Thanks in advance for any advice.

I suggest checking the instructions for the infrared thermometer, the readings are based on emissivity and that changes with
material. The cooler temperatures you are measuring all from the hoses, I think this maybe related to emissivity. It would be good
to keep track of the temperatures and see how they change with load and ambient temperature.

I would check the upper and lower surfaces of the radiator it self, rather than the hoses. But your readings do show the lower is cooler,which is what you want. But the temperatures should be higher than what you are reading. As far as your block temp-it is right on.And that is the one that counts! Mark.

I'll monitor the temperature at the radiator, but I'm comforted that my block temperature is not overly high. I did check the temperature gauge by grounding the wire and it is working.

As I mentioned earlier, I was concerned the gauge was not functioning properly because it barely moved into the green when the tractor was at operating temperature.

Thanks everyone for the advice. [/quote]
