Oliver 550 Oil Light

The 550 came originally with a low oil pressure light. Previous owner unhooked the wire and added a guage to it. I put a tee in the line and got a sending unit and hooked it up but the light stays on all the time. Trying to figure out whats wrong, should my test light light up when i touch the pole on the sending unit? Thanks, Chris

Typically, the sending unit provides the ground for the light. The contacts close when the pressure falls below the set point, usually around 5 PSI.

You will need a non grounded lamp socket with 2 wire leads. One lead goes to the ignition side of the ignition switch, the other goes to the sending unit.

I looked at the wiring diagrams, that's the way it is wired up. I'm trying to figure out if the new sending unit is OK or if there is a problem with the wire running to it. I ordered it from this site, but the part number was subbed over to a MF part number. Before I put the new sending unit on it,the light was on all the time, so that would mean that there is a problem with the wire running to the sending unit? If I unhook the wire from the sending unit the light should go out, correct? Chris

Not to be a smarty pants but if one side of a circuit does not have a connection to complete the circuit, no it should not light. Sounds to me like the wire to the sending unit is grounded out somewhere.

Yes, disconnecting the wire should put the light out.

If it stays on, the wire is shorted to ground.

If the light comes on after the engine starts, the sending unit is wrong. Some sending units close with pressure, they are used with other applications, like hour meters, etc.
